Gary is taking on the LEGENDARY World Famous The Big Texan 72 oz Steak Challenge. The Big Texan Steakhouse is on Route 66 in Amarillo and contestants have 1 hour to eat a 72oz Steak with sides to win a FREE meal, T-shirt and your name on the wall! This famous American eating challenge has been attempted by almost 100,000 people including Will Ferrell!! The infamous 72oz Steak Challenge was on Man V Food and around 5 people attempt the Big Texan Steakhouse Challenge every day! Can Gary, a British Army Veteran, complete the enormous 72oz steak within an hour? We're currently travelling the States in our motorhome and are doing the Route 66 Roadtrip right now.
Right guys, so we're in the Big Texan Steakhouse and Gary is going to take on the Big Texan Steak Challenge.
72 ounce steak and trimmings.
72 ounce steak and sides. So I'm not quite sure what the sides are.
Now, as it stands, we're sitting on the edge table. I'm not allowed on the table with him.
And he will be on a table, on a kind of stage area.
So, I'm going to eat first. I'm going to have something to eat first to get you salivating.
And then he's going to take on the big, massive Big Texan Challenge.
So Gary's got to sign a disclaimer. And what's the key elements on that? What's the key takeaways on your disclaimer, Gary?
Okay, so it starts once I've cut into it, had a quick bite to say it's cooked already.
And I say yes. Once I say yes, then the 60 minutes start.
I can't stand up or leave the table or have anybody touch the food.
For the entire hour?
The entire hour.
Yep.
Nobody can help me cut it up or eat it, which is obvious.
Yep.
If I become ill, I've got to use the container next to me.
I'm just going to show you the stage area that Gary will be eating in. And the container next to him is just there.
There's the cooks. You can see there's a timer up there.
So if I'm ill, I lose.
But you have to pay up front, don't you, as well?
I've got to pay up front, yeah.
So it's $72 and you've got to cough up before.
Well, you don't want to be coughing up anything.
How are you feeling?
I'm feeling quite nervous, actually.
I'm really hungry, but I'm still nervous because that's a bit of a monster state.
But if I don't do it, I can take the leftovers home so we've got food for the next week anyway.
Well, you have. I'm not eating it.
Okay, so here's the full details.
To be a legend, you have to eat the legend.
And this is what it is.
You'll get a free 72-ounce steak, but you've got to eat it within an hour.
You've got a dinner roll, three fried shrimp cocktails, one baked potato, one dinner salad, and a 72-ounce top sirloin.
So we're still waiting for Gary's to come out.
And I've just had mine, and I had just chips and ribs.
And honestly, I'm stuffed. I couldn't even eat it all.
And normally, I can eat a lot, can't I, Fabs?
So I'm just saying to Gary right now, and I'm going to say it on camera.
If you can't do it, baby, you mustn't.
But don't worry about it.
He's very competitive and he'll feel bad if he doesn't do it.
And I don't want you to feel bad.
He's just got steak for a year. That's all.
You've just been told your food's ready.
I've limbered up.
How do you feel? Are you nervous?
I am, actually. That's a monster steak.
It's a monster steak, and also he's got to do it on a stage.
And there's loads of people here. Look, look, look.
It's absolutely rammed in here.
Look at this. Let's just have a look at it.
It's a monster.
Gary-o, you're fooling now.
Well, if the van breaks down, we can ride that home.
He needs to do one bite.
This is the very first bite to see if it's cooked to your liking.
So he's just trying it now.
It's a great steak, is it? Well, that's good.
Because you've got a lot to eat.
Oh, my God.
So tell us what you've got, Gary.
You've got a massive steak.
I've got a 72-ounce steak. It's medium rare.
Right.
I've got a baked potato.
A baked potato.
I've got some prawn things.
Some little battered prawns, by the looks of it.
That's quite a big salad.
And some lettuce.
Oh, God, it's started.
So they've just started the clock.
After they've done singing, I'll announce the steak.
So she's going to make an announcement shortly.
So what they do is they make a bit of a song and a dance about it.
And everybody's sitting around.
I'm stood here on my crutches.
So if the camera's a bit rubbish, sorry, everyone.
A salad, a roll, and three shrimps.
If he does not complete this, he owes the Big Texan $72.
Give him a big round of applause and cheer him on.
Okay, so my time has started.
And I'm down at 60 minutes.
Just gone.
In fact, I couldn't say what started it.
I'm just going to pop these.
This is a monster steak.
There we go.
Right, so my time is up.
And I'm going to try this.
That's it, babes.
Is it really good?
It's a good steak, though, isn't it?
It looks like a really good quality steak.
It's cooked to perfection.
Isn't it?
All right, attention, Big Texan.
We've got Gary all the way from England today.
Attention, our $72 steak.
He's got one hour to eat four and a half pounds of meat,
a baked potato, a salad, a roll, and three shrimps.
If he does not complete this, he owes the Big Texan $72.
Let's give him a big round of applause and cheer him on.
Gary, Gary, Gary.
You can have a bit more of that later on.
This is how honest Gary is.
They didn't bring the roll out initially.
And so he said, aren't I supposed to have a roll?
I'd have been right forgetting that.
So that just shows how honest he is.
He's doing really well, though.
Yeah, he's really cutting through it.
Someone else is going to join in a minute, aren't they, Gary?
It's going to be two people doing the challenge.
I think that would be nice for him, a bit of company.
Gary's got 51 minutes, well, nearly 52 minutes left still.
And he's nearly a third of the way through the steak.
He's cutting it like it's butter.
How does it feel still now?
Are you still enjoying it?
Oh, yeah.
Oh, this is great.
You're doing brilliant, bab.
Don't forget, you don't need to eat the fat as well.
It's not fat, is it?
Oh, wow, that's a really lean piece of meat, isn't it?
Gosh, you're doing amazing.
So apparently, I'm getting some company on the stage here.
So that'll be good if someone to talk to whilst I'm munching.
I apologise in advance if you're a vegan or a vegetarian,
but by God, you don't know what you're missing.
So I didn't really have a plan.
I didn't have a plan on how I was going to attack this.
But for one very good reason,
37 years or 39 years in the army has taught me
that no plan survives first contact.
So I've just taken it as it comes.
And we'll crack on and plough through it if we can.
How are you doing?
This is what it looks like.
He's up on the stage.
They've got loads of decorations out already for Christmas.
It's gone to 49 minutes 53.
Gary's really been very impressive.
He's got 43 minutes on the clock.
And he's now...
Did you cut it into three bits, babe?
Yeah.
And now he's on the second big lump.
How are you feeling?
I'm feeling it.
You're feeling it already?
Yeah.
Feeling it like...
I'm alright, though.
I'm alright.
You're doing really well.
I'm going to whip up the crowd.
I'm probably just over a heartbreaking mistake.
I'm certainly starting to feel it.
Not too bad, but I'm feeling it.
I'm trying to chew it as little as I can.
Just swallow it.
It's actually really soft.
So it's not too bad.
Let's see if that works.
Yay!
So the plan is
I'm going to eat the steak first.
Tackle the steak first.
Then I'm going to go with the salad.
And then...
Steak first, then the salad.
Then I'm going to do the prawns.
And then last but not least
I'll do the baked potato.
And then the roll at the end, I think.
See how that works.
If you're ever in this area,
Neck of the Woods, it's a great place.
I was really nervous at first.
Standing up on the stage.
I've stood up on loads of stages
and spoken to hundreds of people.
But they've given up with people
who have listened to me.
Because they've had to.
There's even a bit of live music here.
A couple of guys walking around with a guitar
and a violin doing a bit of music.
So with a bit of luck
they might come and serenade me for a little bit.
He's doing really well
but I think he's getting really full.
Bab, how are you feeling?
I'm good, I'm blessed.
Are you feeling full?
What have you got left, Bab?
He's got a third and then all the trimmings.
He's doing really well actually.
Look how calm he is.
People can come up and say hi
and wish you well, can't they?
Did you try and do it, did you?
How far did you get?
I got about
eight ounces.
Oh, did you? Oh, no way!
Was you gutted?
How did you feel that evening?
How did what?
How did you feel that evening?
Oh, terrible.
You have like a
big lump in your stomach.
For like three days.
Oh God, I'm not going to tell him that.
As it gets colder, it gets tougher.
So when it was nice and hot
initially, it just melted like butter in your mouth.
It was great.
But now it's gotten colder, it's gotten a bit tougher.
This is now hard work.
This is a bit of a...
Oh, you're not allowed on the stage, buddy.
You'll get disqualified if you get on the stage.
See, I know the rules already.
Massive, horrible eating challenge.
Him and the
Joseph, the trucker, who's from
the country Georgia, not Georgia,
are just chatting away
and having dinner as if they're all
friends. It's quite nice.
The youngest one was 11 years old.
11?
No way.
You must be joking.
I don't know.
He probably had a bowl of meal or something.
He can't feel like a hungry.
He's dog on the table.
That is incredible.
That seems like quite a bit of space for him to go.
How does it feel to you?
It's tough.
It's good to say it's tough.
What about assaulting?
Will it make it worse?
It will make it worse.
You can always ask for assault.
Have you recalled it?
I have, yes.
Oh, really?
I have, yes.
Go on.
My fan club.
I'm alright. Don't worry about me.
I'm too close to the steak now.
I'm getting a food sweat.
Let's see how this goes.
I've got 18 minutes and 55 seconds left.
I'm not sure.
My plan to swallow rather than chew was great
for the first three quarters of it.
Now it's gone tough.
It's not easy.
Time for 13 minutes.
It's on now.
Oh, is it?
Are you going to play it from there?
I'm taking the fat away.
You don't have to eat any fat.
You can leave this.
It says on the paper you can eat those.
Definitely not.
If it's fat eating, no.
It's just the side.
There's not loads of steak left.
Are you going to get rid of the prawns?
What are they like?
Dry.
Are they dry?
Oh no.
What sauce have you got?
Do you want some?
You've got 10 minutes 25.
Is it probably just like...
Give it up.
If you're done, you're done.
You know, obviously.
You know what I mean.
You want it that big, don't you?
What do you want to do?
Do you want to just give it that 10 minutes
and let's see how he goes?
You don't need anything.
Let's see how you give it.
Give it a couple of minutes.
Do you want some more water?
I'm going to grab this.
There's no way that I'm going to finish this.
You're going to get less miles per gallon
if you're drunk tomorrow, that's for sure.
This will be enough
for the whole day, maybe two days.
If I split it,
for two days.
Nine minutes left.
Is it going to happen? I don't think.
Crack on.
You never know.
Alright, I think
I'm going to have to admit
defeat, unfortunately.
It was a great steak, but
the last third of it, when it got dry, was tough.
I gave it a shot.
For those who tuned in
and watched me till the end,
I'm sorry I let
her down
and didn't manage the challenge.
Looks like I got a nice
water glass
out of it, if nothing else.
There's quite a bit
of challenge, sir.
It is a challenge.
The big guy couldn't complete it.
He's got 7 minutes 35 left, but he
is done. There is no way
that you're going to be able to finish it, I can tell
by your face. What a brilliant
gallon effort, Gary.
He's on his last 10 seconds.

Well done, Bab.
It's a bit of a dance
when it all comes to an end.
I think the suffering is now
going to start in the road.
Day after, or the morning after.
Right, so what did I think of the challenge?
It was actually a lot of fun to do.
It was a bit weird sitting up
on the stage in front of all those people,
but they were quite supportive,
so it was alright. How do I feel
this morning? I've got the
stomachache from hell. I did
sleep alright,
but I don't want to eat.
I don't think I want to eat today, to be honest.
But all in all, it was
good fun.
