Hello, my dear friend, and welcome back to my English countryside.
Today, we continue our walk through West Dean Estate.
West Dean College, nestled within the rolling hills of the South Downs, owes its existence to one remarkable man.
Edward James. Poet, visionary, and passionate patron of the arts.
In 1932, Edward inherited the West Dean Estate.
But rather than simply managing the land, he envisioned something greater.
A sanctuary for creativity, preservation, and learning.
By 1939, in a letter to his friend, Edward expressed deep concern that traditional arts and crafts might disappear in the wake of modernity and the looming war.
He feared that the beauty, skill, and soul of handmade things would soon be forgotten.
Motivated by this vision, in 1964, he established the Edward James Foundation, a charitable trust devoted to supporting the arts and protecting traditional craftsmanship.
This foundation would become the heart of his legacy.
In 1971, the trust founded West Dean College of Arts and Conservation, a truly unique institution where heritage and creativity meet.
The college offers world-renowned programs in conservation, fine art, musical instrument making, and traditional crafts.
It remains one of the only places in the UK where such timeless skills are not only taught, but deeply honored.
Edward James passed away in 1984 and is buried in St. Roach's Arboretum, part of the estate he so dearly loved.
As we wander the estate today through ancient woodlands, flower-filled meadows, and peaceful valleys,
we walk not only through nature, but through a vision carefully tended over time.
West Dean is a gentle reminder that beauty matters, craft endures, and that sometimes, the quietest places hold the deepest stories.
This evening, I'm spending some quiet time in the kitchen, preparing a simple summer dessert.
It's nothing elaborate, just something sweet and warm, but that's the beauty of it.
There's something deeply comforting in these small acts of care.
In a world that often rushes us forward, it's so important to slow down.
To notice the scent of fresh fruit, the softness of candlelight, the joy of stirring something homemade.
Romanticizing everyday life isn't about perfection. It's about presence.
It's about finding magic in the mundane, lighting a candle, making something delicious just for the joy of it.
Summer in the countryside has a rhythm of its own, and when we choose to live in tune with it, something in us softens too.
So today, do something just for you.
Make a quiet corner for yourself. Brew some tea. Bake something.
Take a deep breath and feel the peace of being right where you are.
Thank you so much for spending this time with me.
If this video brought you a moment of calm, I'd be so thankful if you left a comment, a like, or even subscribed.
Your kindness helps this little corner of peace bloom and grow, more than you know.
Take care, and see you soon.
