U.S.Navy forces didn't dare come out to try and challenge the St. Lawrence until they had an equivalent of their own
and so they promptly started building a pair of such ships
as well as making efforts to blow up the British vessel
with something of a cross between an early torpedo and an early mine
This failed and the British started work on two further vessels of their own
albeit that they'd already stripped a trio of third rates out at sea
of various bits of their rigging and other equipment
and then hauled it across land in order to provide the St. Lawrence with her means of propulsion
But as it turned out
her most notable achievement would be to survive a lightning strike to the main mast
whilst patrolling the lake
as the war came to an end before any further first rates could be completed by either side
With the war over and the ship unable to leave the lake
there was precious little reason to keep such an expensive unit active
and the following year she would be decommissioned
The 1817 Rush-Bago Treaty resulted in the disarming of the lakes
which made it even less likely that she'd be called back into service
but she was held in a disarmed state just in case until 1832
when even this cost was then seen as unnecessary
and the hull was sold and eventually turned into an instant pier and storage facility
where she would quietly rot away in the sink
although her keel and the lower part of her framing actually survives in place
and has since been designated a National Historic Site by Canada
and what's left of her today can still be seen with the appropriate permits and permissions
That's it for this video
