July 8 marks the 50th anniversary of the bilateral diplomatic relations between the EU and China.
The EU Commission's chairman, Ursula von der Leyen, reflected on the character of the relationship.
She began by praising China as a great global civilization, which during the last 50 years has been developing into a global superpower.
At the same time as she expressed a desire to establish new relations with Beijing, she criticized China's latest diplomatic actions.
On June 3, China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Berlin explained that China cannot accept a Russian defeat in Ukraine,
as this could make it possible for the United States to fully focus on China.
And I've always said how China continues to interact with Putin's war will be a determining factor for EU-China relations going forward.
When it comes to the economy, von der Leyen warned that the EU's dependence on China's raw materials has increased.
She also pointed out that Beijing continues to flood the world markets with goods without taking into account international trade rules,
something she considered to be a big risk.
Over the past few months, several EU countries have urged the EU to better protect itself from the Chinese commodity flood.
China implemented new tariffs of up to 55% on Chinese imports.
The European Central Bank has reported a 2-3% increase of Chinese goods exports to Europe.
While the number is small, the trend is accelerating to the point of threatening industries within the EU bloc.
At the June J7 summit in Canada, Ursula von der Leyen warned of a new China shock,
blaming Beijing trade practices since joining the World Trade Organization in 2001.
She accused China of using models of domination, dependence and blackmail against its trade partners.
