8th US president Martin Van Buren was dubbed Old Kinderhook because he was born in that town in New York to Dutch immigrant parents, and the abbreviation of his nickname may have led to the slang term “OK.” Both the first president to be born a US citizen and the only president whose first language was not English, Van Buren built his path to the White House on his alliance with his presidential predecessor, Andrew Jackson. As the only cabinet member who sided with Jackson in the Petticoat Affair, Van Buren became Jackson’s vice-president during his second term and continued many Jacksonian policies during his single term in office.
