Ancient VS Medieval Armour: why does ancient Greek armour have so little padding?

It is very easy to assume that armour of all periods is designed to work the same... which, broadly speaking, is correct. However, armour is also a product of its time and its style of warfare. Why is it problematic to compare medieval armour to ancient armour?
