When Shaun and Lilian Khadka realized they have outgrown their home of almost 40 years, they approached their son, architect Sudar Khadka to redesign it. "He said, if you will renovate it, I won't want to have anything to do with it," recalls Shaun. "You will build this house only once in your life. You might as well do it properly."

The result mirrors Sudar's closeness with his parents and his familiarity with their lifestyle - with wood being a heavy accent, cladding the whole expanse of the ceiling. The use of wood captures a common scenery in Shaun's homeland of Nepal, a way of bringing nature inside. The warmth of the wood balances Sudar's use of concrete which was axe-finished for texture. The concept of wabi-sabi guided the design - embracing imperfection and finding joy in its uniqueness.
