The remaining operational lifespan of the International Space Station is quickly approaching its end. That timeline could become even shorter due to proposed budget cuts and the unexpected departure of Russia from the program.
In response, commercial space stations are being proposed as the next step in maintaining the United States’ presence and competitiveness in low Earth orbit. Among these, the Vast space station stands out, not only because of its ambitious schedule but also due to its bold and innovative interior design.

Previously, we reported on astronaut Chris Hadfield’s visit and his hands-on experience with key components of the Vast space station module. Since then, the company has reached an agreement to test station hardware at NASA facilities. This collaboration laid the foundation for a series of new partnerships that reflect strong industry interest in Vast’s vision.
Vast has also partnered with the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space, known as CASIS, to support scientific research through the ISS National Laboratory. This cooperation will help prepare the company for future private astronaut missions, commonly referred to as PAMs. These steps show Vast’s growing presence in the space ecosystem and its commitment to enabling research in orbit.

Shortly after these developments, Vast unveiled the “Haven-1 Experience,” where a full-scale model of the Haven-1 module was presented to the public. Former NASA astronaut and current Vast Lead Astronaut, Andrew Feustel, guided the reveal. During the 40th Annual Space Symposium in early April, NASA Acting Administrator Janet Petro and other NASA officials had the opportunity to walk through and examine the mock-up.
This physical model offered a far more immersive understanding of the design than earlier 3D renders. The module’s interior is stunningly modern and spacious. A primarily white color palette creates a sense of openness, while wood-patterned finishes introduce a warmer, more inviting feel. Most notably, the design features modular systems that are cleverly integrated into the walls. These systems can be tucked away when not in use, maintaining a sleek and uncluttered appearance. The demonstration also allowed viewers to get a sense of scale, helping them imagine what life inside Haven-1 might actually feel like.
