Australia is a multicultural country. Through the peaceful coexistence and integration of multiple ethnic groups, Brisbane's greatest asset—its people, showcases its diversity and creativity.
Multicultural Queensland Month takes place in August each year, focusing on creating a more inclusive multicultural Queensland through learning and celebration. It strives for a Queensland where people from all cultures feel welcome.
As a launch event for Multicultural Queensland Month, Multicultural Australia held the LUMINOUS Festival parade on 3 August at South Bank Parklands in Brisbane. Up to 90 community groups, including government, corporate, ethnic community organisations, Indigenous elders, migrant and refugee communities, religious organisations and school groups; more than 1800 people joined the parade. The parade featured various performances and themed lanterns, attracting thousands of people who lined the parade route to watch and enjoy the talents and contributions of Australia's diverse communities.
The celebrations started at 11 am and included music and dance performances on the Suncorp Main Stage, cooking demonstrations at the SBS Cultural Kitchen, music and dance workshops at the Connecting Through Arts stage, food stalls and, arts and craft stalls.
"This year, we are bringing LUMINOUS and MOSAIC together to create an experience that truly showcases the contributions and talents of Queensland's multicultural communities." Multicultural Australia CEO Ms Castley said.
"The LUMINOUS Lantern Parade has a simple and powerful message of welcome, connection and belonging. It is an invite for people from across communities to walk with us in support of new Queenslanders and play an active role in creating a community that embraces people from all walks of life."
