The real reason why SpaceX Starship V2 keeps Exploding Announced!e real reason why SpaceX Starship V2 Explosion!
Four back-to-back catastrophic explosions. Starship Version 2 is in serious trouble.
From harmonic vibrations and fuel leaks to a COPV tank failure, the problems keep stacking up mission after mission.
And here’s the thing: for most of these incidents, SpaceX has mainly provided broad explanations, without much technical detail. So we still don’t have the full picture.
That raises the big question: Is SpaceX hiding something from us?
Or more directly, what’s the real reason Ship v2 keeps blowing up?
Let’s break down in today’s episode of Alpha Tech!
The real reason why SpaceX Starship V2 keeps Exploding Announced!
For space and rocket enthusiasts, it's always exciting to follow the steady progress of companies pushing the boundaries of technology.
However, interest in SpaceX has recently been met with some concern, especially after Ship 36 exploded just before liftoff.
What’s also worth noting is that none of the nine previous Starship flights have reached orbit or achieved a full two-stage recovery. So far, there's still no clear milestone showing concrete progress toward the Moon or Mars.
This has sparked a wave of mixed reactions, with many arguing that SpaceX is simply wasting money at this point, even experts have joined the conversation. Will Lockett, an engineer-turned-journalist, shared his opinion after Ship 36’s explosion, saying: “This catastrophic failure happened because Musk has cut costs too deeply, as Starship’s development is going nowhere, costs have spiraled out of control, and it’s still a long way from even being partially usable.”

So, did cost-cutting really lead to these explosions, like some have claimed?
Well, maybe. But probably not in the way you think.
SpaceX has already spent around $10 billion on Starship, and yes, Elon Musk is definitely pushing to cut costs wherever possible.
But are these explosions directly caused by that?
If we look closer, most of the problems seem to have started when SpaceX transitioned to the Version 2 design in early 2025.
Now, we won’t go into all the details of Version 1, but to understand how things may have gone backward with the upper stage, let’s revisit Flight 6, the final mission to use the Block 1 configuration, flown on November 19th, 2024, with Ship 31 and Booster 13.
Let’s fast-forward to T+7 minutes and 30 seconds in both flights. While both vehicles reached the same altitude of 145 kilometers, Ship 31 appeared much more stable, cruising at over 21,000 kilometers per hour. That’s nearly 5,000 km/h faster than Ship 35, which only managed around 16,500 at the same point. Same time, same altitude, but a clear difference in velocity, showing that the performance of Starship Version 1 was noticeably better than its successor.
