SpaceX Raptor 3 EXPLODED Again, WHY? Starship Flight 12 Launch Delayed...
It’s happened again.
A Raptor 3 engine just blew apart during a ground test at McGregor. The explosion sent flames surging outward, creeping dangerously close to nearby propellant tanks. For a split second, it looked like this could’ve turned into something far worse.
So what really caused it? Could a serious incident like this affect the launch schedule of Starship Flight 12?
Let’s take a closer look.
SpaceX Raptor 3 EXPLODED Again, WHY? Starship Flight 12 Launch Delayed...
You know, SpaceX is going all in right now, gearing up for Starship’s twelfth flight. They’re gearing up for a series of high-intensity static fire tests on Booster 19, the first V3 booster fully equipped with Raptor 3 engines, all aimed at making sure everything is ready for the next big mission.
But while operations at Starbase in South Texas seem to be moving along smoothly… The real fireworks are happening over at McGregor, Texas, the place where engines either prove themselves… or fail trying.
Just days ago, April 6th, a Raptor 3 was running on the north test stand, that familiar vertical stand, when things suddenly took a turn. According to eyewitnesses following the test, it started clean. Ignition was smooth. The engine ramped up steadily.
And then, about 20 to 30 seconds in, or according to some more detailed reports, around the 72-second mark… everything went sideways.
A massive orange fireball erupted. Thick black smoke followed, along with secondary fires spreading across the test stand. This wasn’t one of those quick, minor shutdowns we’ve seen with earlier Raptor versions. This was bigger. Much bigger. The kind of moment that makes you hold your breath.
And just like that, the engine was gone. Reduced to a twisted, expensive pile of metal.

As for the test stand… it’s almost certainly going to need a very close inspection to see just how much damage was done.
So far, SpaceX hasn’t released any official details about the incident. And that’s not surprising. This kind of failure falls deep inside company secrecy. Even employees aren’t allowed to casually share what happened, not even in a simple coffee chat with friends.
But here’s the thing.
This isn’t the first time Raptor 3 has “decided to self-destruct” in what engineers call a Rapid Unscheduled Disassembly. In 2025 alone, we’ve already seen two of these explosions.
