for you tonight with steps you can take
to protect our four-legged friends. Yes,
absolutely. In a in a heat wave or not,
it's important to keep your dog safe
from the summer heat. Let's take a look.
This may not be our last heat wave. And
as temperatures rise, it's not just
people at risk. It's our pets,
specifically dogs, who need to be
careful of extreme heat. It's important
to exercise your dog in the morning or
night when it's cooler outside. It's
also important to keep them hydrated,
but stay away from ice water. If your
dog comes in from the outside that
you're not giving them like a cold pup
cup or something cold, you want to give
them lukewarm water. It can really upset
their stomach. Once they've kindly
cooled down, you can certainly give them
an ice cream treat. Whipped cream. They
make special whipped cream. We have it
here at Browns. And not only that, you
also need to protect your dog's paws
from the hot pavement that can be over
110°. If you're outside and you touch
the ground and it's hot for you, it's
hot for them. Um, there are shoes that
they could certainly wear, little rubber
booties to protect their paw pads. You
do not want them to burn. You can also
use a cooling blanket to help regulate
their body temperature along with ways
to keep your dog cool. Some people don't
know what to do when they do see a dog
in a car. The first thing you can do is
call 911 to get first responders there.
However, you can use external force if
need be. So, if you see a child or a
pet, a dog, or something in a car, it's
definitely important to dial 911 first
and get the vehicle open and get the pet
or the child out. Um, but if you see the
pet or the child in distress, you do and
are protected by the Good Samaritan law,
so you are able to make entry. Um, I
would always recommend trying the door,
opening it before breaking a window.
On 22 News at 5:30, we'll take a closer
look at how fast the interior of your
car can heat up when temperatures reach
90 90 degrees and above. working for
