John William Waterhouse: Consistency and identity (Coherencia e identidad)

The work of John William Waterhouse is characterised by a remarkable stylistic consistency throughout his career. Although initially influenced by Victorian neoclassicism and later adopting traits of Pre-Raphaelitism, he never entirely abandoned a soft style, imbued with atmosphere and mystery, in which a latent romanticism predominates. From 1900 onwards, under the influence of Impressionism, his palette became lighter and more luminous, and his compositions gained in serenity, though without losing their distinctive identity.
