Franz Joseph Haydn (born 31 March or 1 April 1732 in Rohrau, Archduchy of Austria; died 31 May 1809 in Vienna) was an Austrian composer from the Classical period in Vienna.
The brother of composers Michael Haydn and Johann Evangelist Haydn, Joseph Haydn spent most of his professional career as a court musician at the country estate of the wealthy Hungarian Esterházy family, conducting their orchestra and opera. Describing his isolation from other composers and musical trends, he said: “I was separated from the world; no one near me could confuse or torment me, and so I had to become original.”
