Carrouges Castle - Lower Normandy Region - The French People's Favorite Monument
Perched on its reflecting pool, this castle, still inhabited, boasts architecture and interior decoration that offer a panorama of styles from the 14th to the 18th centuries. Experience a journey through time, just 80 km from Caen!
A chimney towers over four tall, round towers of red and black brick, topped with pointed cones, clustered around a modest main building, itself seemingly dwarfed by a large, low-sloping roof. This is the massive and striking gatehouse, which dates from the 16th century. Behind it, the moat, bordered by a pretty balustrade, surrounds a castle that is, to say the least, angular. It is rectangular in shape, and its very covering roof is also pointed. Brick, granite, and slate are the materials and colors of the rather sober facades. The main courtyard is surrounded by wings from various periods: from the 14th century, for example, remains the keep; from the 15th, a main building housing an elegant Grand Salon; from the 18th, a pleasant function room with a gallery for musicians… The castle, from a fort, has become a pleasure! And we see those who participated in it in the Salon des Portraits: those of the lords and owners of Carrouges are gathered there.
