Can Science Explain the Nature of Consciousness?

Many claims have been made under the ‘study of consciousness’ banner but, can we explore or explain the nature of consciousness using scientific methods?

Rupert says: ‘Science, at least as it is practised now, which is a practice of thinking and perceiving, cannot know the nature of consciousness. Nothing we study with the mind can be the study of consciousness, because anything that is known by the mind shares the mind’s limitations. So, consciousness cannot study itself or know itself through the mind because the mind can only know something limited.

‘But consciousness’s exploration of itself does not go through the mind, so the science of consciousness is very simple. It is just being aware of being aware – that is, self-enquiry. If science were to expand and consider this one unique type of knowledge, namely consciousness’s knowledge of itself, which doesn’t go through the finite mind, then there would be a science of consciousness.’
