SpaceX’s Starship is set to recreate one of humanity’s greatest achievements, landing astronauts on the Moon, a feat not seen since Apollo 17 over fifty years ago.
But with Artemis III just two years away, major challenges still stand in the way.
The Starship lunar lander and its space-based refueling system are racing against the clock, and so far, progress hasn’t been all that reassuring.
So, are we at risk of missing this historic moment?
Absolutely not.
Because SpaceX already has a bold backup plan: the Dragon capsule.
Proven through dozens of successful missions, it could be ready to step into the spotlight.
Sure, it wasn’t originally designed to land on the Moon, but with some stunning new upgrades being teased, SpaceX is once again rewriting the rules and turning the impossible into reality.
So what exactly are these upgrades?
And how could it possibly replace the HLS for landing on the Moon?

Recently, the Trump administration unveiled a new plan to reshape NASA’s future, slashing its budget from $24.8 billion to $18.8 billion, and shifting away from costly government-run programs like SLS and Orion.
Instead, the proposal leans heavily on more affordable commercial alternatives, like SpaceX’s Starship, and possibly Blue Origin’s New Glenn, starting with Artemis 4 in 2028. It’s a dramatic pivot: doing more with less, keeping the Moon and Mars on the roadmap, but taking a very different path to get there.
Sure, this shift could accelerate Starship’s role in deep space exploration. But let’s be honest, right now, Starship hasn’t exactly proven it’s ready for human spaceflight. The Block 2 version already hit snags during its first three integrated test flights, Flights 7, 8, and 9. And for serious deep space missions, we’ll need something far more capable than that.

That’s where the upcoming Block 3 comes in, designed for orbital refueling and equipped with a fully operational Human Landing System. This is the kind of ship that could truly break Starship out of low Earth orbit, carrying heavy cargo and astronauts to the Moon, or even Mars.
But here’s the catch: building and proving all that isn’t going to be easy. It’ll take serious time, enormous resources, and a series of complex technical demonstrations, especially for orbital refueling, which remains one of the hardest challenges in spaceflight.
Right now, Starship’s Human Landing System is still more of a concept than a complete spacecraft. We’ve only seen bits and pieces, like the elevator and hatch door, from a handful of leaked photos. As for the orbital refilling system? Elon Musk himself admitted that it won’t see a full test flight until sometime next year.
