Set high in the Franklin Hills on a ridge once part of the historic Van Pelt Estate, this mid-century modern home captures panoramic views from the snowcapped San Gabriel mountains to the Silver Lake hills. Designed in the late 1960s by architect Dick Lowry as his personal residence, the post-and-beam compound remained in the family for nearly forty years. A subsequent renovation by the next steward preserved its architectural integrity while updating finishes for modern living.
Rooted in the principles of Southern California modernism, the residence is a study in meticulous details, structural clarity, natural materials, and integration with the landscape. Lowry’s USC-influenced design features slender wood posts, overhanging rafters, and tongue-and-groove decking, seamlessly integrating form and function. Walls of glass, sliding doors, and clerestory windows highlight the sweeping views. Craftsmanship is evident in every detail – from sculptural stairs and a tapered chimney to the floating hearth, book-matched panels, built-ins, and custom lighting.
The renovation bridges eras with care: Japanese and Heath tiles and custom MTI countertops enhance the original cabinetry and tapered pulls. Large-format leathered limestone flooring—an homage to classic cork—pairs with quartersawn white oak floors and wood paneling to create a warm, textured palette. The kitchen is outfitted for serious cooking, with Viking appliances, European fixtures, a full-size pantry, and an expansive peninsula for dining and prep.
A sophisticated color scheme of teal, ochre, and umber builds on the home’s natural wood tones. Above the garage, Lowry’s former studio has been transformed into a guest suite, home office, or creative space—complete with kitchenette, half bath, and sweeping views.
Set on over a third of an acre, the property features native landscaping, winding paths, and secluded seating areas—ideal for reflection or entertaining. Rare for the hills, it also includes a generous motor court, large two-car garage, and a lower-level workshop/flex space. Perfectly positioned between Los Feliz and Silver Lake, the Lowry Residence is a singular offering in one of L.A.’s most vibrant architectural enclaves.
