Ever got a Christmas gift that was so bad you didn't know what to do and how to react? We have, so we got Benedict Cumberbatch to teach us how act like you absolutely love that rubbish pair of socks your auntie gave you.
Welcome, I'm Benedict Cumberbatch and today I'm going to be giving you an acting masterclass
on how to fake appreciation for a really sh** present.
Present number one.
I love the wrapping paper, it's so sparkly, I'm going to save it for wrapping up next
year's present.
It's so noisy too, I love the noise it makes.
A book!
I love books!
Microwave recipes for one!
It's just very pragmatic, I need this because I keep on accidentally making microwave recipes
for two.
This is the perfect gift, thank you so much.
I don't like wasting food because we're running low on resources as a planet so this is incredibly,
incredibly useful and I don't have much time in my life for cooking.
I love cooking but I wish I had more time so maybe this will teach me how to enjoy that
fact by using a microwave and if the food looks half as good as it does on this cover,
it's great.
Now, what I did there was took the title and attacked it with positives.
Microwave.
I hate microwave food.
It's just disgusting.
It takes all the taste out, often the goodness.
Recipes.
Nothing wrong with recipes.
For one.
I mean, come on.
What are you saying?
That I'm going to be on my own all my life so I'm going to have to use a recipe for one
person?
So just turn that into...
No, that's very useful.
Anyway, useful what I do.
I should have looked at the price.
£4.99.
That's so generous.
I'm so sorry.
That's...
You shouldn't have.
Okay, this is present number two.
I'm very excited.
Ooh.
It feels so soft.
Oh, oh no.
Really?
Because I can't get enough of socks.
These are so useful and you know this is my favourite colour and I've worn through the
ones you gave me two years ago.
So this is the perfect replacement gift.
Thank you so much.
How did you know?
That's so sweet.
The wardrobe fairy's been telling you things.
So I overdid it there, but I actually do like socks so that's probably why.
There was probably some genuine enthusiasm there.
Always turn it into enthusiasm by, you know, pretending you're really small.
I like it really much.
It's so great.
So then it's as if the gift dwarfs your sense of self.
So the gift becomes enormous in its gratitude and thoughtfulness and brilliance.
Just being really critical about my first effort at the Masterclass in this session,
I think I overdid it somewhat.
So I'm going to try just for a more subtle approach here.
Oh, God, you shouldn't have.
This is huge.
It's so heavy.
Wow.
It's really, really...
I love presents that are hard to unwrap because it just makes it more satisfying when you
eventually do.
You do like your sellotape, don't you?
I do too.
I love sellotape.
It's so much fun.
It sort of sticks things together.
Oh my goodness.
It's developing Excel number five solutions.
This is amazing.
Navigating through the Wellington Cycleworks application.
I'm always getting stumped on that.
It's brilliant and it's not a present that anyone else would have thought of but you.
I really, really...
Oh, God, look at the...
Here.
Idiot proof.
It comes with its own floppy disk.
This is fantastic.
So good.
Look, here's a really easy...
I love it.
Well, you know it because you gave it to me.
It's really brilliant.
Thank you.
Now, really, what I think of this is that it's, you know, good for door stopping, possibly
recycling or hitting someone with.
It's also absolutely obsolete.
It's an outdated mode of anything.
You're probably all too young to realize this, but it's called a floppy disk.
I'm too affected by what I did.
It was too good.
Right.
Okay.
I'm not going to be so patient this time.
I'm so excited about this.
Oh, yeah.
I love it.
This is clever because this is such a neutral color.
Oh, thank you for thinking of that.
I love that.
That sort of ribbed texture.
That means it's going to just be...
Look at that.
See, it stands on my hand.
Can't wait to light this.
Make it short and sharp sometimes.
Be quick.
You know, get off the present as fast as you can before, you know, the insincerity starts
to creep in or you overdo it because then people know and they go, you sure, really?
I'm sorry.
It's so small.
I just think, you know, just reassure them.
Always reassure the present giver.
What is it?
A teapot.
This is so unique.
I don't think I've ever seen anything like this.
This is extraordinary.
I love it.
Is it a teapot within a teapot within a teapot?
No, don't worry about the price.
I didn't see it.
It's all gone.
Don't be ridiculous.
It's so generous.
Are you kidding me?
I love it.
Look, it's handmade and I love the colors and it's nice because at this time of year
it's all sort of dark and gray outside and this is such a colorful object.
Oh, it's a teapot with its own cup.
It's perfect because it's space saving.
It's neat.
I mean, together with the microwave for one meal, it's so economical.
Look at that.
That's a present.
That'll last.
This will last.
I love it.
Thank you.
I slightly overdid it with enthusiasm, but genuinely you can see what the advantages
are to this piece of ----.
It does have a practical application.
It's a teapot and it's a cup and look, the teapot and cup go together.
The benefits of having it are obvious, despite how ---- it is.
Oh, oh, oh, oh, it's a really loud ----.
Oh, to remind me of when there is sunshine in my life, unlike today outside.
This is fantastic.
Gosh, that's terrific because it will scare the neighbors and keep everyone away.
It's wonderful.
I love it.
I love the little guys dancing at the bottom.
It's got such energy and vibrancy about it.
I love it.
Put it on now.
Not a chance.
I lost it at the end there.
I mean, sometimes it's good to be completely honest, but at the same time, just remember,
you know, people put a lot of heart and soul and effort into that.
Obviously, not a lot of money because it's acrylic and probably highly flammable and
I think came from a charity shop because it smells of someone else's B.O.
Unless it's theirs and they gave it to you, in which case, don't mention that at all.
At the same time, thought was had.
Maybe, oh, ----, I haven't got him a present.
What am I going to get him?
Oh, that's disgustingly tasteless.
Maybe he'll find it amusing.
That's the other thing.
You've got to balance it.
It's a little bit like going, are you pregnant or is it just, you know, you could be very
careful about people's intentions.
Very careful.
Always act your way through those situations.
Oh, look at you.
You look so wonderful.
You look blooming.
Oh, you are pregnant.
That's wonderful.
Remember that people put thought in and there's an intention behind their generosity.
And use that.
Use it.
I've been Benedict Cumberbatch giving a masterclass for the hook.
If you want to add your comments and tips, please do and let the fun roll on.
Happy Christmas!
