Take a closer look at the extraordinary flickers of paint in the vibrant canvases of François Boucher’s Four Seasons series with Xavier F. Salomon, Deputy Director and Peter Jay Sharp Chief Curator.
Commissioned by Boucher’s great patron, Madame de Pompadour—the longtime mistress of King Louis XV—these four paintings were designed to hang above doors, which explains their distinctive shape. The series was later acquired by Henry Clay Frick late in his life.
