Alaska, the last frontier
Only the most adventurous come to live on the edge
in the vast, unspoiled wilderness
That's beautiful
Woo, this is what I'm talking about
Awesome
If you want to live in Alaska
the real amenities are outside
Here you have your second bathroom
with a million dollar view
And those views change round the clock
Now that's Alaska
Oh my goodness
And every day is an adventure
when you are living Alaska
Look at here, Alaska
There's just this freedom to do things
It feels like you're in the old west
Alaska has some of the best hunting you'll ever get
It doesn't take months and months of planning
It takes an hour
Hey, let's go hunting
OK
And we're gone
You can't do that in Lower 48
What do you want to wager
Hmm, how about if you lose, you'll cut wood
If I lose, I'll gut animals
Sounds good
Looks like you're gonna be cutting it
Mike and Megan Hiberonski are avid about the outdoors
It's a little low
So when the military offered Mike a job in Alaska
It was like winning the jackpot
Alaska came up and I was excited
I was giddy like a kid inside
Another good shot
I always grew up hunting fish
And I can remember being a young boy
My dad used me as a bird dog
To go out and retrieve a dove
That we used to shoot or quail in New Mexico
This is something that I've always dreamed about
Coming up here and teaching my boy
The same things that my dad taught me
Oof
I wasn't expecting it to be a dream
But it actually has turned into one
Still shooting pretty good
Yeah, you're not gonna win
Better places to raise my kids
Our kids
Excuse me
Here comes the money shot right here
If that is your money shot
We are going to be poor in Alaska
I think you won it
Since I love you
You don't have to cut wood or gut anything
I'll do it with you
They're moving from Colorado Springs, Colorado
Very lower 48 looking is the Colorado house
So they made the 3,000-mile trek
From Colorado Springs to Fairbanks
We don't plan on leaving Alaska ever
I think, right?
Yeah
But before they can get lost in the last frontier
They need to find a place they can call home
Any place that I can have land
And hunt right outside my backyard
Would be a huge plus to me
So I really don't have to ask the wife permission
To go out on a couple-day hunt
I can just go for an hour or two hunt
In my own backyard
That would be excellent
That's where real estate agent Brandon Phillips comes in
He knows a thing or two about military families
Making the move
I felt like I was being punished
When I found out the army was shipping me to Alaska
I had no idea what to expect
I got here in the first summer
I kind of just fell in love with it
And decided this is where I wanted to be
Where I wanted to put down roots
I wanted to meet you guys here
At the northernmost brewery in America
Very cool
What are some of the features
That you're looking for in a home?
Three bedrooms
Two baths
We really want the Alaskan feel
Some place not terribly far from our work
In Colorado we had a 40-minute commute
But we would like to shorten it if we could
But also we want the seclusion
I prefer shop
I work on a lot of things
I'm kind of a little bit of a motorhead or a jeep head
Okay
Then I would just like a garage for my own space
And him to just have a shop for his own space
And then that way he can have his man cave
And hang all of his trophies in there and everything
I've got my trophy right here
Dang it, why are you always up me?
What kind of price range are we talking about, guys?
Anywhere between 200 or 300
If it's a fixer-upper
We're okay with that
But if it's turnkey
We're okay with that too
And something with a good kitchen
He's a really great cook
Yeah, I love cooking
Yeah
After I find you guys a house
You're going to have me over for dinner?
Oh, yeah
Absolutely
We'll smoke you some pork or burgers
Keeping the commute to 30 minutes around Fairbanks
Includes areas like Salcha and North Pole
So today, Brandon's taking them
13 miles east of Fairbanks
To a place on Long Shadow in North Pole
All right, guys
So this house that I'm going to show you
Is in a very nice neighborhood
The house is actually right around the corner
From this school
And Mike, you're about five minutes
From the back gate of Fort Wainwright
Just going straight down this road here
That ain't bad at all
No
That's really good
How far is it from Fairbanks?
You're 10, 12 minutes from downtown Fairbanks
Depending on road conditions
It's nice
It's definitely an Alaska-looking home
With the logs and everything
It's very Alaska
It's beautiful
So the Long Shadow house is two bedrooms
One and a half bath
It's priced at 262,500 dollars
900 garage square feet
Sitting on an acre
Nice
Beautiful
I'm more excited about the shop right there, though
So which one do you guys want to see first?
You want to see the house or the shop?
House
I think she wins
The house
Okay, let's go see how she wins
Oh my gosh, look at the ceiling
It's beautiful
Yeah, it sure is
Everything's brand new in here
Everything's brand new
It's a brand new house
Never been lived in
It's big
Very Alaskan
As a matter of fact
This house is so Alaskan
That these are Alaskan white spruce
And they were milled locally
Down at Bonanza Creek
There is a little bit of maintenance
That you need to do on them
You have to take care of the exterior
You have to reseal it every few years
And then sometimes you have to
Re-insulate in between the logs
And that's something called chinking
I did not know about log maintenance
On a log house
And it is a deterrent
What do you think of this kitchen?
It's not bad
I wish it had more room
But otherwise, I mean
It's going to be great for cleaning, you know
Fish or moose or anything like that
That I bring home
Yeah, she's not going to let you
Clean game in this house, man
I've let him before
Ducks, I'm just saying
You never know
Does this have a fireplace?
I don't really see one here in this area
No, this home does not have
An alternate heat source
It has forced air heat
But what I like to tell my clients is
It's always something
That you can do later
I believe that everybody
Should have an alternate heat source
Of some sort here
In the event the power goes out
In the middle of the winter
Your house is going to start to freeze up
In about 24 hours
So what's back there?
There's one bedroom on the main level
Along with a utility room
And a bathroom
Okay
Upstairs is the master suite
With a three-quarter bath
With his and her closets
And an extra storage area
This is definitely
An interesting master bedroom
So is this a normal closet for Alaska or...
Well, I wouldn't say
There's anything really normal about Alaska
Who's going to have to get in there?
They crouch down to get inside
We'll send the kids in
Yeah
That's the other thing
Is this is no doors
There's no privacy really for...
For anything, you know, activities
What are the pipes
Sticking out of the garage?
See here
This is a septic clean out
So we're not on city water
And sewer out here
Which means you're pumping
Your own water out of the ground
And you're disposing of it
Back into the ground
Away from your well
Okay
And then about once a year
You're going to have to
Pump out your tank
I'm sorry, what?
They have companies around town
That'll do it for...
So we hire somebody to pump?
Yeah
It's $300 to $400
But you're not paying for water or sewer
It's not as crappy as it sounds
It is not
And you don't have an outhouse
This is what I'm talking about
Good in here
Along with my snow machine
You got 900 square foot
To do whatever you want to do with it
Mike could live in the garage by himself
I don't even think
He would need a refrigerator
We want to live Alaska
This is definitely that
It's a little small
It's just a two bedroom
Yeah
I know we wanted a three bedroom
And a nice house
Beautiful house
I love the shop
That's my big thing
It's a toss up
It does not have the Alaskan feel at all
You could actually open that window
And just shoot right out your window
That sounds like a challenge, Brandon
Actually, I know a great place
We need to go right, yeah, right where
I know exactly where to go
We shot low
Oh, okay
Can't wait to go hunting out here
I know we're going to do so much bear hunting
It's going to be amazing
Mike and Megan Hiberonski
Are itching to get their own piece of Alaska
So they can start living their dream
I'm ready to begin the dream
The Alaskan dream
I'm a huge hunter, fisher
My family loves camping and fishing
I'm grateful and excited about it
Nice
Got them
They're moving from Colorado
And can't wait to continue
Their friendly competition
Especially when it comes to angling
I'm not going to lie
By luck, my wife usually catches more
I am way better at fishing
But so far, they're not having any luck
Finding a house
Actually, I know a great place
We need to go right, yeah, right where
I know exactly where to go
They've been looking for weeks
In and around Fairbanks
That's only going to wash the neck down
Here, I'll let you back out
All righty
Yeah, it does not have the Alaskan feel at all
That might be a minus, yeah
They're hoping for a house
That has lots of land and privacy
So Brandon's taking them to a place
On more than 60 acres in Salcha
45 minutes southeast of Fairbanks
Salcha's not known for a whole lot
It's a small community
That's really spread out
There's a lot of agriculture out here
Dog mushing and that's about it
The house is a little bit smaller
Than what you're looking for
But Mike, it does have a big shop
Okay
And you are sitting on
63 acres of land out here
Yeah, that's going to be great
Driveway's a little muddy here, Brandon
Well, it's breakup time in Salcha, Alaska
So it's going to be a little muddy
Okay
So this home is a two-bedroom, two-bath home
It's about 1,000 square feet
Of residential living area
About 900 square feet of garage
It's priced at $247,400
It's nice, it's well-kept
It's just not logs, but
I do like the front porch, though
I can see myself sitting there
On the rocking chair
Oh, wow
Wow, it's cute
I love the vaulted ceilings
Yeah, the vaulted ceiling is really nice
It's very open
So there's a bathroom over there
Yes, there's a bathroom and a bedroom over there
Okay
And then a bedroom and a bathroom in here
And then you have a little office nook area
It's a big kitchen for you cooking your game
It's a great kitchen
Brandon, I know you said there's 63 acres here
Is it all out this direction?
It goes back really far
It's a wide but incredibly long piece of land
Like you said, I can be sitting here cooking
And see a moose out there and walk out
You could actually open that window
And just shoot right out your window
That would be good
That sounds like a challenge, Brandon
Is this the garage?
No
It's not
Oh, it's a utility room
This is a huge
Really big
It's huge
It's a huge Alaskan utility room
Babe, you can bring a game up this back door
And onto this table
Oh, wow
I like that screened-in porch there
That is pretty neat
Oh, you can see all of Alaska from here
But you can keep all the Alaska mosquitoes
Out there with a screened-in porch
What is that, Brandon?
That is the remnants of some dog kennels
I don't know if I like that
I have to remove that
Oh, wow, Brandon
This place is huge for an attached garage
Oh, it is
Told you you'd like it, man
One of the Alaskan features of this garage
Is you are wired for a generator right now
So the power goes out
Get your generator going
Plug it in
So that's the alternate
Source of energy
Yes
Heat
Exactly
So if you're going to live out here
You need to be prepared to take care of yourself out here
Is there an airport or what's
Yeah, you're right across the street
From Eielson Air Force Base
The jets are awesome
At the Sultra house
Hear all that
Oh, my God
There's a room right over here, too
Yes, there sure is
Used to be a feeding room
This was a mushing house
But it would make a great area for cleaning meat
Or tying plies or reloading
Whatever you wanted to do in there
The shop is exactly what I've been looking for
Then there's only the two bedrooms
So we'd have to build another one
That takes time and effort and energy
Private, I mean
This is really secluded
It is really beautiful
But then again, our privacy also takes us
40, 45 minutes away from work
But it's not a deal breaker
And the land is kind of a deal maker
I definitely like that
We have lots of land to do whatever we want
That's a huge plus
Brandon, can you text us the address
Man, do we drive into a trailer park?
I don't even think I want to live next to that house
Look how dirty that wood looks
The Haiberonsky family is taking a leap of faith
To live their dream in Alaska
This avid outdoors family
Jumped at the chance to transfer
From Colorado to Alaska
And now they're searching for their ideal home
But the search has been less than perfect
Brandon, can you text us the address
I don't even want to get out and look at that place
This isn't what we're looking for
They need to be close enough
To Fairbanks and Fort Wainwright
So their commute is doable
But far enough away
So they can feel secluded
Brandon said this one has more land with it
So this will be good to check it out
There it is
You know if I like that, babe
This one's definitely a deal breaker
Today, Brandon's meeting them
At a house in North Pole
About 15 minutes east of Fairbanks
What do you think about
Trying to live out here in the North Pole, babe
I don't know, I really love it
It's so beautiful
The North Pole community is a small town
About 12 miles east of Fairbanks
We have the Santa Claus house
There's candy canes everywhere
If you live in the North Pole
You definitely live around the corner
From Santa Claus
Look how secluded this is
There's got to be a lot of moose
Out here in this area
There's tons
Look how thick it is
Here it is right here
It's private
It is
Don't see a shop though
That could be an issue
Good to see you
Good to see you too
So what did you think of the drive-in
Beautiful drive-in
We like the area that it's in
Right
The house doesn't look very Alaskan though
But I think you're going to be happy
With some of the features
It's got on the inside
The North Pole house is
Three bedrooms, two bathrooms
1,500 square feet of living area
With a 700 square foot garage
This house is sitting on just about an acre
And it's priced at $239,900
Which is great
Looks like they got wood
Yes, there's about seven quarts of wood
On the ground right here
Is that enough for us to heat during the winter
Like do I need to worry about
Getting more wood and splitting it
Well, yes and no
So this is going to be enough wood for you
Through the course of the winter
But you're going to want to get more wood
This year to burn next winter
Because you definitely want to
Stay a year ahead on your wood
And what's the reason for that
So that your wood's dry
That'll make us true Alaskans
When we do that
Yeah, sure will
Nice
Wow, Brandon, this is big
I know it's got a lot of space for you
But it's not too big
Where we're like over cleaning
Which is great
Look at the stove
This is what all that wood outside was for
It's like perfectly cozy
It's wonderful
Kitchen's over there
If you want to check that out
Oh, it's bigger than I expected
Yeah, I actually do really like the open galley
Because a regular galley is pretty closed in
Yeah, you know what though
We can go through there
And come in with the garage
From the garage with our groceries
But what's even more perfect
Is that you can go out this door
And then just bring all your games
That you cut right back there
Yeah, I mean there's a little deck
And put my smoker out there
And we can smoke up some salmon
There you go
This is a perfect girl's room
This would definitely be Carson's room
It's big though
These are big rooms
They are
That's actually a good plus here
That is, that's awesome
This is the master
It's actually pretty big
The closet here
Let's see if it's got enough room for us
Yeah, I definitely think it
Probably needs to be a little bit
Larger than that for us
Well, these people are organized
Oh, you know what though babe
You couldn't see a neighbor from the front
But you can definitely see the neighbor
From our master bedroom here
All right, Mike, here's your garage
It's big
It's actually pretty big
For not having to shop on the property
I guess that's why the garage
Would be fairly large
My wife's car is going to be in there
One of our other vehicles
Probably going to be in there
And I'm not going to have room
For me to do the things
That I like to do at this house
What about trash here
Is there city trash
That comes and picks it up
Or how does that work
No, there's no city trash here
Okay, so we have to haul our own trash
That's something that's interesting
To think about
Welcome to Fairbanks
It's definitely an Alaskan thing there
I'm sure of it
I do like the open space
That is awesome
That is so beautiful
That's exactly the picture
Of coming to Alaska
And just having a view
Did you picture that
Coming to Alaska
What is that, Brandon
What happened here
Okay, so this leach field
Had to get replaced
In the middle of winter
And all the dirt's frozen together
So they kind of put it back
As good as they can
And then after a good thaw
A couple weeks of good warm weather
Like we're having now
They'll come back out
And take it back to final grade
But you guys will be buying grass seed
If you buy this place
I don't like the outside
The outside of the actual house
The yard's wonderful
It actually is a yard
Which is awesome
The house isn't very Alaskan
Though with the
It's not
But it is low in price
It's at our lower end of the budget
So we would have the money to do it
But we also have to build a shop
Yeah, it does not have a shop
I don't like that
What about the neighbor in the back
You know, it's in the back bedroom
That could be a deal breaker
Just look this way
On average, Fairbanksians
Can see the northern lights
How many nights per year
120 nights, 240 nights
Or every night
On average, Fairbanksians
Can see the northern lights
How many nights per year
The answer, about 240 nights
Auroras occur almost nightly
But Fairbanks is so far north
That the short summer nights
And limited darkness
Make them impossible to see
Unique Alaskan
Oh, spices, cooking stuff
Here we go
This is us
Oh, you guys do silver gulch
Mike and Megan Haiveronsky
Are ready to jump head first
Into everything Alaska has to offer
I'd love a buffalo dog
I'll do a reindeer dog, please
Reindeer dog, yep
Is it good
Yeah
I think it's awesome
Oh, I have buffalo, it's good
We're gonna decide on these houses
We do
So the long shadow house
What do you
I mean, I like it
It's got a nice big detached shop
Master bathroom and the master bedroom
Are both open
Like I just don't
Yeah, there's no privacy around the house
But probably one of the most
Alaskan homes we've looked at
The exterior is perfect
It looks really good
Yeah, I really do love
That Alaskan look that it has
Sorry, I know it has your garage
But I just didn't like
Anything else about it
What did you think about the sultry house
The sultry house was great
I love the oversized garage
It had that special little side room there
That I could reload
Or we can clean the game in
It is a bit of a hike out there
About 40 minutes
It might be worth it though
It is 63 acres
We can hunt on our own land
And that was the dream
That we wanted to come true
By moving here
What about the North Pole house
I didn't love the exterior
You can see the member
You can see the neighbor in the backyard
The commute's short on that one
It's the exact commute we wanted
Didn't have the separate shop though
That I want
It's at the bottom of our price point
We could build it
And it is three bedrooms
Which is exactly what we want for our kids
I think we made a decision
On what house we want
We're looking at the North Pole house
North Pole house, yay
We're gonna be neighbors
It fit us the best
And we still had the opportunity
To actually personalize it
And build a garage on our own
And we have the Alaska view
That we wanted
And that was really important to us
Do you think this reindeer pool
Stand a slay
I think it's just exciting
And we get to just say
We live in Christmas year round
We live in Alaska year round
It doesn't get much better
Alex, you want to live here in the North Pole
Yeah
We're living in the North Pole now
It is great for Christmas
My family is jealous a little bit
Santa Claus is right down the road from us
Oh, look, it's Santa
It's good leverage
You know, for the naughty nice list
You want him to be your neighbor
Yes
I want Santa to live next to us
I know, me too
We're gonna live in
Lawson, dang it
Oh, they got it, don't worry
