在加拿大北極,這艘俄羅斯製造的Aleutian 76空母航空母艦
正在進行重新供應任務
Over the course of 20 flights, it is delivering 8 massive truck and trailer sets to Mary River, Nunavut
The site of the northern most open pit iron mine in the world
The giant air freighter has to deliver the goods before the weather warms up and the snow melts
The snow is essential for the Aleutian to land on the gravel runway, so timing is critical
At Mary River, truck superintendent Patrick Boucher isn't just waiting for new trucks and trailers
His repair shop desperately needs replacement parts for his ailing fleet
At the airstrip, maintenance crews roll out the white carpet for their giant visitor
Not at the moment, my gear's tied up out on the strip
What we're seeing when the sun is coming down, you're getting a little bit of a shine
It is actually turning to ice here right now
So we'll have to get the graderator again and actually try and scratch this area here
It's actually got good breaking
Using the grader with the scarifying, you're still going to get a snow gravel mixture
We're still looking at 90% gravel snow mixture right now
So we've only got an hour before the plane gets here
The Mary River airstrip is more than 2,000 feet shorter than the Aleutian's standard landing distance
A gravel surface is a risky proposition at the best of times
Ice just adds to the jeopardy
In Mary River, we will land without using reverse thrust
Because the runway is unpaved and has gravel
On an asphalt runway, the flight crew uses reverse thrust to slow the plane after touchdown
On Mary River's gravel, reverse thrust would be catastrophic for the plane
On gravel, reverse thrust would suck rocks into the engines and potentially shred the internal fan blades
The jet's engines could be damaged beyond repair
Current weather right now, it's winds are at 090 at 20 knots
The altimeter is 2956 and we've got 5 statute miles on the vis
The alternative, reduce speed in the air
As the plane enters final approach
Captain Komarov will deploy the wing spoilers to create drag and slow down the plane just before touchdown
The mechanical brakes in the landing gear will do the rest of the work
The Aleutian hits the runway at 155 miles per hour
The wing spoilers lift up
And the mechanical brakes are applied
Nearly 2300 feet down the snow and gravel airstrip, the Aleutian has landed
Safe on the ground, the crew checks the brakes for signs of stress
We have landed, in my opinion, very well
Because we used only mechanical brakes to keep the minimum speed on the runway
Mary River airstrip is not set up for nighttime takeoffs
We've got to get this offloaded as fast as we can
We've got to get out of here, we're fighting the sun, it's coming down on us quick
We can't afford to get stuck here overnight
This is just the first shipment, there are 19 more to go
The rest of the trailers, not to mention the tractors that pull them, are waiting in North Bay
Tomorrow we're bringing a tractor unit and a pump trailer
After three flights we'll be able to build one complete set
So they can get it to work as soon as possible
We're probably going to fuel on arrival
We'll be loading first thing in the morning at first light
Ready for a second departure
The first load delivered, the Ilyushin is ready for takeoff
The Ilyushin rockets back to North Bay
From his cabin on the lower deck, the navigator reports to air traffic control
Originally designed for military purposes with a glass nose
That enabled Soviet navigators to scan both sky and terrain
This Ilyushin has been upgraded and modernized
This new modification of the Ilyushin-76 TD-90VD
Is substantially different in terms of navigation from the previous model
On the old models, all devices were analog
But here you can see digital devices
Such as this flight navigation system
Which greatly ease the work for navigators
As they close in on North Bay, Nicolay picks up a weather alert
A storm has hit Jack Garland Airport
With the storm at North Bay limiting visibility
The Ilyushin must find an alternate airport to land at
We're looking at the possibility to divert to Ottawa Airport
Just over 180 miles from North Bay
Ottawa International Airport has the only runway within range
That can handle this massive aircraft
We have landed in Ottawa, which creates several problems
Puzzles just being pulled apart at the moment
But we're going to have to wait and see what happens
In the air freight business, every pound and every minute counts
So pulling this mission off is already a tough job
Now, this delay puts the entire mission behind
After an unexpected diversion to Ottawa
Colin Taylor and the Ilyushin crew head back to North Bay a day behind
I plan for the weather being the Arctic being the main issue
The weather seems to be following us
And, yeah, causing all sorts of delays
Yeah, hopefully we'll have good weather
And we'll get a good few rotations in without any weather issues
While the crew begins loading immediately
The detour to Ottawa forces Colin to adjust his load plan for the weekend flights
It's throwing the program out slightly
Because at the weekends we have a reduced payload requirement
Due to our first alternate military base being closed
So we've had to shuffle the flight around
The change is about the maximum weight the plane can carry
If they cannot land at Mary River
The Ilyushin needs additional fuel to reach its alternate airports
Carrying extra fuel means Colin must sacrifice cargo
The tubs are the lightest pieces we've got
So instead of taking a truck and a trailer
We'll be going back to the two tubs
As Colin rushes to load the plane
Nearly 1900 miles north
A blizzard is hammering the Mary River airstrip
So I was on my way to flight ops
Just got note that they're shutting everything down
Because the weather's too bad
Now the only question is how long will it last
At flight ops
Truck superintendent Patrick Boucher
Checks in on the status of his delivery
Hello
Hi Wendy
How about flights
I don't think anyone's going to be going anywhere anytime soon
Not today
How about tomorrow
It's a slow moving system
It's going to hang out right over us
I can't see the Ilyushin landing
OK
Back in North Bay
Project manager John Dingwell updates Colin
Listen I just got the latest weather from site
OK
It's down to an eighth of a mile of snow
And blowing snow right now
Thank you
Bye bye
Flight is busted
We're not going anywhere today
It's a standard blizzard
And it'll last all day
And it may even last two days
I mean every time we think we've got a plan together
And just about to finish it off
Something happens
It's putting everybody under pressure
We're a day behind
And just a day behind on everything
Because there's no way to catch up
You can't fly at night
You can't fly twice as fast
When the weather gets good
A little concerned about uplifting this amount of fuel
After 48 hours of snow in Mary River
Miners head back to work
And plows prep the airstrip for the Ilyushin's arrival
We haven't seen a storm this bad here
Probably since I started working
With the storm over
The focus is on clearing the runway
Unfortunately we don't have control over the weather
That's a factor of being up here in the Arctic
Something we have to live with
But the major priority is getting this open
As the Ilyushin takes off from North Bay
404, 6-7-9, 6-7, North Bay
With an amended altitude behind me
The snow drifts in Mary River are a major concern
The drifts out along the side of the strip out there
You can clearly see them from here
A good four feet high, so
If a plane lands and it goes through a drift
It can slow it down, it can catch stuff
It can get stuff into the engine
Absolutely we have to stay on top of it
The runway has to be in immaculate condition
On board the Ilyushin
The crew preps for Mary River
4-6-9-8, this is Mary River, go ahead
The wind is blowing stronger from this side
But we will still go for landing
The Mary River airstrip is combed
And ready for reception
The current weather right now
Temperature is minus 3, dew point minus 8
The altimeter is 2-9-5-6
Temperature is minus 2-9-5-6
Yes, roger that
Using its wing spoilers to create drag
The Ilyushin slows itself
Before touching down at the very edge of the runway
Again, without reverse thrust
Using only the spoilers and wheel brakes
The giant plane stops
In an astonishingly short distance
It's a big heavy aircraft
It's short runway
We've got incredibly skilled pilots
On board this aircraft
We were indoors for the past days or so
So it's great to see that the freight is finally coming in
We have many delays as it is for now
As soon as we can get these trucks on the road
The better it is
Unfortunately for Patrick
The plane does not have the truck he was expecting
It is somewhat disappointing
The main purpose is to have trucks running
So we want to have a complete B-train configuration
So it's two trailers and one tractor
The Ilyushin has four on-board cranes
Each capable of handling up to three tons
The sooner these tubs are unloaded
The sooner the Ilyushin can deliver the next load
One bit off, one more to go
And we'll be out of here
As they race to unload the cargo
Can you see up top there?
It's just right to the side
Stop! Stop!
A tub nearly collides with the cargo hold
It is tight
Go slow and we'll do it safe
We don't want to catch
We don't want to wreck the airplane
Very carefully
They pull the ten-ton tub out of the plane
There's a black ledge there
We've got a couple more inches
So Colin, can you confirm
That there's a tractor coming tomorrow?
Yes, plans to bring one tractor unit
And one truck trailer
So that'll give you all the pieces
To make one complete truck
Perfect, thank you
Each day without the new equipment
Translates to tens of thousands of dollars
In lost revenue at the mine
The pressure to deliver is rising
As the crew takes the four-hour flight
Back to North Bay
Today's flight to the mine
Is supposed to transport the final parts
Needed to build the first complete
Truck and trailer set
If it's possible
Engine heater
This time, North Bay's weather
Isn't cooperating
The aircraft is covered in sheet ice
I had to order an engine heater
We've got one engine
With the blades are free
But at the moment
These are not spinning
Because the ice is holding it in place
It's bad news for Colin
Every delay eats into
Their short window of flying time
We're not going to be able
To go anywhere
Until this thing gets de-iced
An overnight storm
Has coated the Ilyushin-76
In a thick layer of ice
Now they've gone to get
The engine heater
So they'll be back in five minutes
We can't take off
With this amount of ice
Sitting on the aircraft
They need the de-icers
To get to work
Or they'll have to wait
Another day to deliver
The first of eight trucks
To the Mary River mine site
Right and left
Style
Engineer wants
The whole fuselage de-iced
Front edge, leading edge
And trailing edge on the wings
And then if you come in
At an angle and blow
On the leading edge
On the stabilizer
The Ilyushin is bigger
Than anything he's de-iced before
We don't work on this aircraft
So we're not really familiar with it
The biggest I've done
Would be a C-130 military aircraft
No matter where the ice builds up
Inside the engines
On the spoiler flaps
Or on the wings
It can be deadly for an aircraft
I don't want them to miss these areas
It's key that this aircraft
Is de-iced correctly
That is the only rig we've got
They can't go any higher
Can you reach the stabilizer
Fully extended
The de-icing crane
Can barely reach the stabilizers
If that's frozen
Then it stops us
Adjusting the stabilizer
We'll either not get up
Or we'll just fall out
The skies
Over 1,800 miles away
News of the Ilyushin's ice delay
Reaches Mary River's
Flight Operations Unit
No, no
I thought that the original plan
Was a 130 arrival here
Okay
Yeah, I'll just
Keep you in the loop here, Steve
Yeah, go ahead
Right now we've still got issues
Just got another update
Copy that
How's it like to get a plane here
But every plane that don't land
Is still millions of dollars lost
Because we're not moving or
So, yeah
We've got to get those planes in
In North Bay
Colin Taylor is pushing the de-icers
To clear the Ilyushin stabilizers
De-icing is taking a lot longer
Than we thought
The operator says that
When he's at his fullest
He can just see the top
So once he gives us confirmation
That that is clear
We'll be good to go
The plan works
The de-icers blast
The last patch of ice
Yeah, we're good to go now
The Ilyushin is bound
For Mary River, Nunavut
With the first tractor section on board
So we're finally de-icing the aircraft
We're desperate to get this one delivered
It's the final part
That allows them to create one full truck
And can start work immediately
In Mary River
Now it's good weather
That is creating problems on the airstrip
It's not normal
Like this time of year
For it to have temperatures like this
The rocks generates heat from the sun
Which actually causes water
And when the temperature in the ground
Is below zero
It actually creates ice
Ice on the airstrip
Makes an already tricky landing
More challenging
The flight crew needs to slow the plane
Even more than usual
We will be approaching the runway
At a minimum safe speed
And then when we land
The length of the runway
Will be enough for us
It is a fairly hard landing
But we have worked on it
And prepared ourselves for this
Touchdown
速度170
The truck nearly goes off the rails
They lined up pretty oddly
As you can see
Just all the way to the right side there
I wasn't sure that was right
To fit on the illusion
The tractor's front wheels
Were swapped with smaller travel wheels
Those narrow tires
Make it tricky to maneuver down the skinny ramp
So they have to take it slow
It's a good relief to see that truck there
Today's been the pinnacle of all the flights
Because today's flight
Allowed us to bring one complete set
Of this equipment up
So they've now got a brand new truck
The third shipment is delivered
Time for takeoff
They've got to get in the air
Before the weather changes in Mary River
And disrupts the schedule again
We unload in Mary River
As fast as possible
Fuel up and fly back
To carry out the next loading up
It is a very busy schedule
Very limited time
Ten days and eight flights later
Colin and the crew are still playing catch up
The latest snag
A missing fuel tanker
No fuel, no takeoff
The tanker was supposed to have arrived
Last night at 9.30
That's the final information I received
The Aleutian is a thirsty aircraft
Jack Garland Airport
Does not have the fuel needed
To refuel the plane
So they must truck it in from Toronto
Nearly three hours away
For this one to get in
The time I've done this one
You should be here
Okay, so about 15 minutes or so
10 minutes?
Yeah
They have to pump in
Over 14,000 gallons of fuel
So every minute counts
Now, two hours behind
Colin's delivery window is about to close
The last departure out of Mary River
Is approximately 6.30 tonight
At the moment
It means that we're not going to fly
We're only just about going to get in
By that time tonight
It's a really tightly run ship
And it only needs one thing to be out of place
And the whole thing can fall apart
This Aleutian 76 is refueling
For its next flight to the Canadian Arctic
But the fuel truck is almost empty
I want this plane up in the air
In a couple of hours
We need to do a full rotation
Everyone's pulling out
All this stops
And the fuel at the moment
Is my real concern
Colin must deliver two trailers
To Mary River Nunavut before sundown
Because the airstrip at the mine
Is not set up for the Aleutian
To fly out at night
We've got 2,000 liters going on now
The next truck's going to have about 14,000
The one that we've got now
Has got to go back and fill
Which will be about another 45 minutes
Before we see that one again
The fuel finally arrives from Toronto
Over two hours past Colin's scheduled departure
Time is running
At the moment we're three, four days behind now
It's key that we can get this project complete
We'll probably be fueled by 12.30
Good, fuel's finished
We've just got everything loaded
We've buttoned up
The pilot's going to have to crank it
If we're going to get out here on time
For the light drops
Once airborne
Colin uses the four-hour flight time
To plan the cargo offload
Meanwhile in Mary River
Airport tech operator Corey Glover
Inspects the runway conditions
It looks like the visibility
Is starting to drop down
Light snowfall
I don't know, may not turn out good
Fingers crossed
Hours into the flight
Copilot Igor Nikolayev
Checks the conditions at Mary River
We check the actual weather, the forecast
The weather is getting worse with every minute
So as we get closer, we will see
Despite the gloomy forecast
Visibility is good at Mary River
Even after a dozen flights here
Every landing in Mary River
Is its own adventure
Sunlight now becomes the most important factor
There's just over an hour before sunset
So everything must be unloaded
Before it's too dark
For the illusion to fly out
It's all down to the skill of the loadmaster
How far we can push these things
We've got approximately six ton
On the two front cranes
But combined with the winch
As they battle the clock
Did you hear that pop from the winch?
I went to the blue
Winch, no good
The far crane has popped basically
And stopped working
Unfortunately we're not going to have time
To fix it here
Because we're fighting the sun at the moment
We've got the sun down
In just a little over an hour
If we're not airborne
We're going to be stuck here
We need a loader
Patrick calls for reinforcements
We can use it just to raise the legs right now
Hey Bernie
Is that high enough for the tractor to pull it?
So now they're bringing the truck
And they're going to hook up the lead trailer
And it's going to get out of here
With time ticking down
The offload is complete
We're going out of here right on the wire
It shows just how tight this operation is
Just as they're ready to go
There's a problem with the engines
Before they shut down
They normally need to start their APU
For some power generation
But APU did not want to fire
The auxiliary power unit or APU
Is a small jet engine in the fuselage
Without it
The plane has no electricity
And no way to start its engines
We couldn't start the APU
The spark plugs are filled up with fuel
Without power
The Ilyushin is just another piece
Of broken mining equipment
They don't get that going
They're not getting out of here
This is an old spark plug filled up with fuel
We will change the spark plugs
And after that we will try to start it
For moments like this
The Ilyushin travels with a crew
Of highly specialized engineers
This is the moment of truth
By the looks of it
If it goes you're going to see lots of smoke
This time the APU kicks in
Another challenge overcome
Colin is ready to finish the mission
We're just going to keep pushing
The crew are up and ready for it
And that's fantastic
Over the past four weeks
The Ilyushin crew has delivered
Seven sets of trucks and trailers
Inside the cargo hold
Are the final sections of the eight
Now we are securing the cargo
With chains and straps
On the landing strip in Mary River
Mine boss Brian Penny
Awaits the Ilyushin's arrival
There's very few aircrafts in the world
That could actually meet the demand
That we asked for
And so we're very lucky
That the Ilyushin can do it
A month into the mission
The spring days have been getting longer
Making the snow-packed airstrip softer
Sun's out
Almost 24 hours a day now
The gravel's loosening up on the airstrip here
And that was one of their concerns
With the plane
Loose gravel makes landing the Ilyushin
Much more challenging
And stopping more difficult
Finally on the ground
It's mission accomplished
Despite challenging weather
And the rocky runway
Colin and the Ilyushin crew
Come through in the end
I've flown around the world
On 747s, Antonov 124s
And the Ilyushin
Out of them all
The Ilyushin is the most impressive one
The new trucks and trailers
Get straight to work
That's a heavy hauler
Very happy that they're on the road
And getting this ore delivered to port
With the new trucks on the road
The mine can now haul
3,000 additional tons per day
That means more money, more jobs
And a very happy mine boss
So job well done to the Ilyushin group
A job well done by our group
Here at site as well
No other plane could have pulled this off
Never seen anything like that
To have cranes inside
And to be able to carry
that kind of a payload
That's pretty cool
The Arctic threw everything
it had at this mission
But the giant bird came out on top
Proving that even among
the world's elite transport aircraft
The Ilyushin-76 is in a class of its own
