An Sylvia is a song for piano and voice, composed by Franz Schubert in 1826 to a text by William Shakespeare, translated by Eduard von Bauernfeld (1802-1890). It was first published in 1828 as Op. 106 No. 4, although it is currently referred to as D. 891 according to its position in the standard Schubert catalog. The song is in the key of A major and a standard performance lasts 3 minutes.
What is Silvia, say you,
That she praises the wide meadow?
Beautiful and delicate I see her approaching,
Pointing to heaven's favor and trail,
That everything is subject to her.
Is she beautiful and good too?
Charm delights like mild childhood;
Cupid hastens to her eye,
There he heals his blindness
And lingers in sweet rest.
Therefore Silvia, sound, O singsong,
To fair Silvia honors;
Every charm she conquers long,
Which earth can grant:
Wreaths to her and the sound of strings!
