Chinese Porcelain for the Asian Art Sale | Golding Young

This week I'm at the Grantham Auction Rooms with John. We're talking Asian art, something very impressive you're holding at the moment. What is it? This is a bit of Chinese porcelain, not terribly old, it's 20th century, but it's what we call Cantonese Famille Rose. So it's very typical of this sort of work. It's got this all-over design of flowers and a surround of butterflies and all sorts going on. It's made for the Western market, specifically the European market, and it's been typically exported to the West from China for about 200 plus years. Very nice piece to have, very decorative, very attractive. The other piece you wanted to show me here is more of a bowl shape though, isn't it? Tell me a bit about the second piece. It is. This is again Cantonese Famille Rose. You've got the sort of repeating flowers and the birds and the butterflies. You've got the figures in interiors, again typically Cantonese Famille Rose porcelain. What makes this piece that much more unusual is it's not made for the Western market. It's made for the Middle Eastern market and specifically for Persia. Wow, and this is a really nice piece. It's a large piece. It's a large piece, yes. It's a 19th century bowl and it was made for a Persian Sultan, so it's a really good stable that it's come from originally. Wow, and that's lovely to have that background to an item, isn't it? It is, yes. And what again makes it so unusual, you've got a very different background colour here in the sort of Persian blue, which you wouldn't see on the European pieces. Okay, so specifically designed for that market. Specifically designed for that market and it's even got reserves here which show that it is for that Sultan's service. I love it, lovely piece. It's really great. If you'd like to know more about the Asian art side of things, go to the website goldinyoung.com.
