Mamma mia, che figuraccia!
Che figuraccia!
Where I teach you to speak Italian like a native Italian speaker.
Before we get started, remember to check the description below
because there's extra material to learn and practice Italian.
Figura has a lot of different meanings.
It can mean illustration, picture.
It can mean figure, form, shape.
Or, like in this case, it can mean impression.
There are many expressions that revolve around the word figura.
For example, when we say in Italian
Fare bella figura
that means to make a good impression.
Sei stato bravo al provino.
Hai fatto una bella figura.
You were good at the audition.
You made a good impression.
Fare una brutta figura
or una cattiva figura
means to make a bad impression.
Non ti sei comportato bene alla festa.
Hai fatto proprio una brutta figura.
You didn't behave at the party.
You made a very bad impression.
So the word figuraccia, which I used earlier
is the negative variation of the word figura.
We could translate it simply with the word gaff.
Let's go back to the dialogue.
No, non ci posso credere.
No, I can't believe it.
Mamma mia, che figuraccia!
Mamma mia, what a gaff!
Have you ever made a figuraccia in your life?
Do you feel brave enough to share it in the comments below?
I'm very curious.
So guys, this is it for today.
I'm going to see you in the next video of this playlist
to speak Italian like a real Italian.
Ciao!
