CHAMONIX Classic ski tours - Col du Passon UNTRACKED POWDER!

Day 4/4 of the early April powder, after getting first lifts up at Grands Montets. The Col du Passon is probably one of the best known and most popular lift accessed ski tours in the Chamonix valley, due in part to its more than 1500m of continuous vertical descent! Before the old cable car burned down the traditional start was from the summit of Grands Montets, giving an additional 1000m or so of descent before starting the climb. Today most people either start skinning from Lognan (the mid station), or take TS Herse and then ski down and round to join the lower skin track (as we did). Those who are really keen/fit can still skin up and over the Col des Rachasses first and ski down the Glacier des Rognons as per the traditional route. Whichever way you choose, be sure to start early and move fast to beat the crowds, and ascend the couloir before it gets too warm.
