Kesha reveals she was an extra in “Dreamgirls” with Jennifer Hudson and spills the wild story behind her hit song “TiK ToK,” calling it “too dumb!” Plus, she talks launching her own record label and working with T-Pain!
You're awesome.
It is so nice to finally get to meet you.
I've seen you perform before, but we've never got a chance to meet.
And I heard that we almost crossed paths one time.
I was an extra on Dreamgirls.
What? Really?
Serious?
Bible.
Kesha was an extra in Dreamgirls for like $120.
I love you. For 16 hours.
I sat there with my hair teased to the gods.
Yeah. Oh, my God.
No offense. I hated it.
You know, you're going to make me go rewind it back.
And I'm going to rewind it back and try to spot you in the film.
This is amazing.
But you y'all were amazing.
It was like we were just an extra in a scene.
It was a big auditorium, downtown L.A.
Yes. Yes.
I don't remember the name of the theater, but we shot everything downtown L.A.
That's for sure. So you were definitely there. Yeah.
OK, so I know we're both musicians, so we have that in common.
But I want to learn from you.
Where did your musical journey start?
Oh, like in the womb.
Yeah. My mom's a songwriter and she taught me how to write songs.
Like since I was little, I would go to the studio with her and fall asleep
in the guitar case at the studio on stage with her even.
So and then I would come home from school and I'd be like, Mom, this boy
was mean to me, and she was like, let's write a song about it.
So it was like how we dealt with everything as a family.
Now look at you. Yeah.
I'll type like this.
Yeah. And TikTok was a huge hit, and you wrote that at 21.
Did you know it was going to be the hit it was?
No. Oh, my God.
No. When I was writing TikTok,
it was weird because the dumber it got, the better it got,
which was confusing.
I was like, I like to think of myself as a fairly intelligent human being,
but it just got dumber and dumber and better and better.
So when I listened to the final product, I was like, this is too dumb.
And it's like one point five billion streams at this point.
That don't sound dumb to me.
That is amazing.
Now, this is your sixth album that's about to come out.
Can you tell us about it?
Yeah. So my album comes out July 4th,
called Period, but like just the period.
And this is my first album.
I'm the CEO of Kesha Records, my own record label.
And I this is the first album
that I have legal rights to my own voice.
Yes, that's a good. Yeah.
Yeah. So I'm really excited for the world to hear this
because I've been in control of everything.
I've written every song, co-produced everything.
It's my own record label.
It's been all of my vision, all of my words, a lot of hard work, a lot of joy.
Really coming back home to myself
and feeling what freedom really looks like, feels like, sounds like.
I love it. Oh, well, we can't wait for this album. Right, guys?
And I want you to have a new song featuring T-Pain.
Oh, yeah. What was it like working with him?
Oh, do you know T-Pain?
Yes, we did a song together on my first album.
Yes, my first album.
He's so much fun. He is. He's so fun.
So I met him like way back in the day
and we connected because we both are just kind of like, oh, whoa.
Those are his glasses, too.
We had too much fun.
We had a lot of fun.
He taught me how to make it rain properly.
Properly? Yeah. OK.
I was doing it wrong.
Oh, my goodness. That's hilarious.
So him and I were both kind of playing with autotune, like as a fun tool.
And then everybody started to think, at least in my case, like, oh, she can't sing.
And we've talked about it, that he had the same kind of thing with him
where just because he played with autotune, that's what people assume.
That's what people assume.
Yeah. But he just works really hard.
He's such a joyful person.
He's weird as hell. He's very gifted.
I love how you say he's weird as hell.
This is amazing.
