However, all of these objectives are steps toward an even more groundbreaking milestone—catching the Ship using Mechazilla’s launch tower arms. If successful, it would be the first time a spacecraft of this scale is captured instead of splashing down or landing with legs, radically reducing turnaround time and refurbishment costs.
Previously, Elon Musk stated that SpaceX would need to complete at least one more successful ocean landing of the Ship before attempting this complex tower catch maneuver. However, he hadn’t given a specific timeline—until now.

Musk’s new timeline suggests the company is taking a more cautious and measured approach.
Second, it’s noteworthy how Musk tempered expectations with the phrase “if fate smiles upon SpaceX.” This uncharacteristically modest tone reflects a realistic understanding of the challenges ahead. Given the technical issues experienced during the first few flights this year, SpaceX is likely prioritizing reliability over speed. It’s a wise move. Taking extra time to ensure that the vehicle performs flawlessly will be critical to the success—and safety—of any future catch attempt.
