Starship Flight 9 has become the center of attention in the aerospace world. However, the path to this milestone hasn’t been easy—it hinges on two critical factors: SpaceX’s preparation progress and the decision from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Thankfully, one of those factors has now been resolved.
In a major development, the FAA has officially approved the license for Flight 9. In their announcement, the agency stated:
“The FAA conducted a comprehensive safety review of the SpaceX Starship Flight 8 mishap and determined that the company has satisfactorily addressed the causes of the mishap, and therefore, the Starship vehicle can return to flight. The FAA will verify SpaceX implements all corrective actions.”

The agency continued:
“With the Starship vehicle return to flight determination, Starship Flight 9 is authorized for launch. The FAA finds SpaceX meets all of the rigorous safety, environmental, and other licensing requirements.”
This decision marks the culmination of a nearly two-and-a-half-month-long review process between SpaceX and the FAA following the anomalies observed during Flight 8. It’s a significant step forward.
Just a few days earlier, on May 15, the FAA had issued a public notice approving a license modification for SpaceX, which also greenlit up to 25 Starship launches annually from Starbase. However, they noted at the time that the investigation into the Flight 8 mishap was still ongoing. Since the final mishap report from SpaceX was only submitted on May 14, the FAA had yet to complete its review.
