President Donald Trump said on Friday that he would impose a 25% levy on Apple's imported iPhones.
I have long ago informed Tim Cook of Apple that I expect their iPhones that will be sold in the
United States of America will be manufactured and built in the United States, not India or
any place else. He wrote in a social media post. If that is not the case, a tariff of at least 25%
Apple sells over 60 million iPhones in the United States annually,
with roughly 80% of them made in China currently.
The company is positioning India as an alternative manufacturing base amid Trump's tariff war with
China that have raised supply chain concerns and fears of higher iPhone prices, Reuters reported.
It has already stepped up production in India and shipped some 600 tonnes of iPhones worth $2
billion from India to the United States in March,
marking a record for both its contractors Tata and Foxconn.
