This is my personal and heartfelt rendition of Romance Anónimo—one of the most iconic and emotionally resonant pieces in the classical guitar world.
Also known as “Spanish Romance,” “Romance de Amor,” or “Jeux Interdits”, this timeless melody has captivated hearts for generations. It’s a piece wrapped in mystery—its composer still unknown, with possible origins tracing back to the 19th century. Some attribute it to Antonio Rubira, Narciso Yepes, Tárrega, Sor, and others, but no single name has ever been confirmed. That haunting anonymity only adds to its mystique.
While the piece has been around for over a century, it rose to global fame through Narciso Yepes' performance in René Clément’s 1952 film Jeux Interdits (Forbidden Games)—forever linking it to themes of love, memory, and quiet grief.
🎸 To me, this piece evokes the elegance of old parlor music—red letters, candlelight, lost love, and timeless human emotions. As a musical storyteller, I imagined and created my own “parlor fantasy” around this theme—rooted in nostalgia and intimacy. I hope you feel that atmosphere as you listen.
📖 Historical Note:
The earliest known recording of this piece dates back to circa 1897–1901, performed by Luis and Simón Ramírez and preserved on wax cylinder. Though its exact origins remain a mystery, the music speaks clearly—in the universal language of longing.
