The Violin Sonata No. 4 in A minor, Op. 23, is a piece for violin and piano by Ludwig van Beethoven.
Composed in 1800/1801, it was written at the same time as the Violin Sonata No. 5 in F major, Op. 24, also known as the 'Spring Sonata', which was composed in 1801. Like the latter, Sonata Op. 23 is dedicated to Count Moritz von Fries.
The Violin Sonata No. 4 in A minor, op. 23 is a sonata for violin and piano by Ludwig van Beethoven.
It was composed in 1800/1801, at the same time as the Violin Sonata No. 5 in F major, Op. 24, also known as the 'Spring Sonata', which was composed in 1801. Like the latter, Sonata Op. 23 is dedicated to Moritz Reichsgraf von Fries.
With its dramatic mood, the Violin Sonata Op. 23 contrasts with the cheerful 'Spring Sonata', also composed at this time. With both works, Beethoven finally moves beyond the level of occasional music to which violin sonatas had previously been confined.
1st movement: Presto
The first movement is characterised by an extended development section which, at 92 bars, exceeds the 71-bar exposition. This section develops the main theme and the two motifs from the transition. Instead of the expected recapitulation, a new arrangement of the main theme is heard, and it is heard again in the coda.
The video was captured in the Berenese Highlands by Christian Schlegel and edited by Wenjing Ma.
