Nestled within the rolling hills of Carmel Valley, in the heart of the Santa Lucia Preserve, stood a dwelling that seemed to have emerged organically from the landscape itself. Winged Retreat, a creation of Aidlin Darling Design, was more than just a house; it was a testament to harmonious coexistence, a structure that breathed in sync with the ecological sanctuary it inhabited. The very essence of the Santa Lucia Preserve, with its deep commitment to preserving natural beauty and fostering a life lived in concert with nature, permeated every carefully considered line and material of the home.

Perched gracefully on a sloping terrain, the main house unfurled its two wings along a north-south axis, a deliberate architectural strategy born from a profound understanding of the sun's daily journey. This orientation was the cornerstone of a passive climate control system, a silent yet powerful mechanism that ensured the interior remained a haven of comfort throughout the changing seasons. The southern facades, resolute and largely solid, stood as sentinels against the intense summer heat, their sturdy forms preventing direct solar penetration and maintaining a cool interior embrace.

Yet, even these protective walls were punctuated by a thoughtful detail: clerestory windows positioned high above. Sheltered by the generous overhang of deep eaves, these elevated openings served a dual purpose. During the cooler months, they welcomed the low, warming rays of the winter sun, bathing the interiors in a gentle light. Throughout the year, they diffused daylight, casting a soft, even glow that eliminated harsh shadows and created an atmosphere of serene illumination.
