To address this, SpaceX has been developing an in-space refueling system—essentially a way to top up Starship’s tanks while it’s already in orbit. The idea is simple: after Starship reaches space and uses most of its fuel to escape Earth’s gravity, it will need to dock with a second Starship—one filled with fuel—so that it can be refueled and continue its journey to destinations like the Moon or Mars.

Most importantly, it featured something we've never seen before: two large valve structures likely intended to connect with fuel lines. These could be early versions of a Quick Disconnect (QD) system—hardware designed to safely transfer cryogenic fuel in orbit.
