Hello my name is Megan Lorson and today I'm going to show you how I like to
create my beautiful volumous ponytail style. So I'm going to show you all the
products I'm using, how I layer them in the hair,
and how I put everything up into the ponytail. So let's get started.
So the first thing I always like to do when starting a style is to just brush
through the hair, make sure it's free of tangles.
That way we have a really good starting point and we're not fighting with tangles
and frizz as we move through the style. And I'm going to be, I'm using my wet
and dry brush by Kayla. I do have this linked on my Amazon storefront as well
as my LTK page. So if you guys want to check out this
brush. I love these detangling brushes, the wet to dry brushes. They're just
really good brushes for detangling the hair when I'm
creating bridal hairstyles. Once I have the hair
nice and combed through, I'm going to be using some of my
Kenra Luxe Shine Oil. I typically always like to start with putting an oil in the
hair just to start nourishing and
moisturizing the hairs. And this starts to bring out some of
that shine in the hair. And this is always also going to help to
fight frizz throughout the day because when hair
lacks moisture, that's when it starts to frizz. So we want to be building products
into the hair as we create our bridal hairstyles so that it helps to
fight the frizz all day. So once I've got my oil worked
through the hair really good, I'm going to go ahead and section her
hair off. Just going to section the front sides
off. And we're going to start working on this
back section right here. So I'm going to take
about... you don't want your section too thick because
you want the heat to be able to penetrate through
and curl the hair. And if the section is too thick,
it's not going to hold the curl all day. So the heat penetration is really key to
having lasting curls that last all day.
So once we've got our first section here, we're going to prep
this first section. And I'm going to be using
a little bit of my Air Smoothing Cream. This is just a really lightweight cream.
Again, this helps with moisture and it's also going to help those little
frizzy pieces stick together and smooth the hair. I'm going to run it
underneath on the sides where they have those
really short frizzy pieces and especially down through the middle
to ends of the hair. And then you can take your brush or comb
and just comb all of that through. And then I'm going to layer in a little
bit of hairspray. So I'm going to be using my
Air Flexible Hold Air Spray. And I'm just going to give it a couple of
light sprays going down the hair. And then
immediately after, I just like to comb the hair down. If they are somebody who
doesn't have a lot of texture in their hair,
if their hair is super sleek and fine, I like to take some
texture, my Texture Air Spray, and just spray a little bit of texture
spray in there. This is going to really help to hold
that curl to hold in their hair. I'm just going to comb through that.
And then I'm going to be using my Hot Tools Curl Bar
1-inch Curling Iron. This is also linked in my
Amazon storefront. I love using this a lot because it comes with
three or four other different sizes. So it's very convenient to travel
with because I have all the sizes. All right, so we're going to start by
curling the hair on this side. And everything on this side is going to be
curled into the middle. And I'm doing a twist wrap. So I'm
twisting. Every time I come around, I'm twisting my thumb.
So we get that really pretty wave and curl pattern.
And then I'm just going to hold it on there for a few seconds. That way
the heat really has time to penetrate through. Again, this is really
key for creating those long-lasting curls. If the heat
doesn't get all the way through the curl, you might have a pretty curl to begin
with, but it's not something that's going to
last and hold all day. So once I've held it on there long
enough, I like to just hold the curl in my hand for a minute and just kind of
bounce it to let it cool off for a second and then release it. And if you
guys can see the curl pattern, this is the type of curl pattern that
you want to get with that twist wrap technique.
Now when I move into the center of the hair curling,
then I'm going to flip-flop my curls back and forth. So the outer ones always
are going to come in towards the middle. Same with this side. These curls are
always going to go in towards this way. And then when we work in the middle
curls, I'm going to flip-flop the middle ones
back and forth. That way we get lots of like texture and movement in the curls.
And I'm just going to hold that on there to let the heat penetrate all the way
through. And just another little tip, don't be
afraid to use too much product when
creating your bridal hairstyles. So as you can see, I layered in quite a few
products. We didn't overdo it. So start with less,
work in more as you go. But you can see I
definitely layered in quite a few products.
And the key and the thing that really helps too to distribute those products
evenly throughout the hair is brushing them through.
That way they evenly get through the hair
and work like they're supposed to. All right, and then this next one
we're going to curl the other way.
And I'm not going to really worry about pulling out the curls
yet. I did tug on these two just to kind of show you
the wave pattern of what it looks like. But I'll show you
what I like to do and why after I release this curl.
I'm just going to hold on a few more seconds.
And then we're going to release it. I like to just let it bounce
and cool for just a second and then release it.
But I'm just going to let it be. I'm not going to tug on the curl. I'm not going
to try to pull it apart and fan it out. I'm just going to let it set and cool
just like this. And then we'll go back through towards the end of the style and
manipulate and start to tug on the curls
and fan them out like we want. I'm going to split this
section in half. I'm going to go ahead and
do this curl the other way. And again I'm
wrapping it around and twisting. Every time it comes back around I'm twisting
the hair with my thumb so my thumb ends up
pointing straight up. And that's how you get that beautiful
wave pattern that you see here. We're going to hold it. Let the
heat penetrate all the way through. And then I'm going to show you the next step
for what products I use next and how we continue to move up the hair.
We're going to release this one. Let it just cool off in your hand for
just a second and then just let it fall. And then this
last section right here is the one closest
to the end and we're going to again we're going to have this curl
inwards like away from the face. And I'm doing that twisting wrap curl
technique. We really want the overall look of this
to be kind of textured and
not the glam wave ponytail. So if we did the glam wave ponytail you would have
the curls going all in the same direction.
So this one we're keeping it more textured and volumous and flowy by
alternating the curls. Okay so that once that is released
we're going to go ahead and spray a little bit more
flexible hold hairspray. This is the hairspray and there's some frizzy pieces
up here so I'm going to go ahead and just get those
kind of calmed down through this top section. I'm going to spray a light
very light layer on the ends and then I'm going to go ahead and layer in a
little bit of my texture hairspray.
Once we do that we're ready to move on to the next section
and we're going to go ahead and take about the same size section
the same thickness and just make sure that section is nice
and even. And then we're going to just clip this
up out of the way so it's not in our way
while we're curling and then we're going to start to layer on
some products. What I like to do is just lightly
take that top layer that we just let down not combing through the curls we
just did. This is important but I'm just kind of smoothing out that
hair getting it to lay flat. I'm going to go in with some more
smoothing cream just a little bit so I'm taking about
that much and then I'm running it through my hands
first. This is important because you don't want to just go in with the
product and have a huge amount stick to one section so
run your hands and then you just want to
very very carefully just evenly distribute it through that
section. And then I'm going to go ahead and
pick up that section that I just brought down and it's very
important that we don't mess up these curls and do a lot to comb through and
we're just going to kind of let them rest there for now.
But I've got this whole section in my hand and I'm just working that smoothing
cream through the hair. Take my brush and just quickly comb it
through. We're going to take a little bit more
flexible hold air spray and just smooth down those
little frizzy pieces and get a nice even layer all the way
from the top to the ends. I'm going to take my
comb and just help seal those little frizzy pieces down
and then we're going to spray a little bit of texture spray.
Again this just gives it some more grip and some more hold
and then we're ready to go back in and curl. So we're going to start over here
on this side again
and the important thing too is to make sure that each section you pick up
that it's nice and smooth. If you need to take your comb and comb through it you
don't want any tangles or knots especially if their hair is longer. There
could be some knots in it so make sure it's nice
and smooth before you start curling because if you curl and it's not
free of tangles and there's some frizz in there
you don't want to iron in that frizz into the hair with the iron.
So make sure it's nice and smooth before you
wrap it around the curling wand. All right I've just
finished curling this section so I'm going to show you again how I layer the
products in. I'm going to be using the Flexible Hold
Air Spray which is the hair spray and just go ahead and work out some of
that frizz now. We're not combing out the curls yet
and then just do a light spray of that air spray
and then again I like to go in with a little bit of texture spray. This is just
going to help build volume in the hair as we work up in
layers. All right after we've finished this
section we're going to again take our Flexible Hold Air Spray and just
lightly spray that down the hair. I love this
hairspray also because it just adds the prettiest
shine into my bridal hairstyles. Actually the whole entire
line adds just such a like beautiful shine to the hair even the texture spray.
Every single one of the products even though it's like texture sprays
they all just add such a beautiful shine. They do what they say
which is one of the reasons I do use a lot of the Air products.
Also I do want to point out on this top section as we get closer to the top I
did start the curl pattern a little bit higher up on the head so
you can start to see there's some texture in this top area right here.
Now when we have about I'm going to turn her this way a little bit so you can see
how much hair we have up here. This is about the point where I like to
start creating the volume in the crown area.
So what I'm going to do is just very carefully
lay this hair on top of our curls. I'm going to grab
my pink pewter comb and I'm going to be using some of the Design Me
Puff Me Texture Powder. So I'm going to take the end of my comb and we're just
going to start sectioning and I'm actually going to go
ahead and use that to bring some of this front hair
back. So I'm going to have her tilt her head back.
So I'll show you we're going to start bringing about
that much hair back and teasing it. I'm going to take my
pink pewter comb and start sectioning the hair off.
I'm going to comb it straight up first. Make sure there's no frizz. Make sure the
hair is all going in the same direction. Once I have it combed straight up, I'm
going to pump in some Puff Me Powder
and we're just going to do a little bit of a tease
at the root.
I typically like to tease between 12 and 13 times. That's really going to
lock in the tease. Anything less than that, the tease will just start to fall
out of the hair. Also in combination with a texture
powder, it really helps to lock that tease in. I'm going to continue to
take a section. Make sure it's the whole size
of that section. Comb it straight up and I'm going to
pump a little bit more of that texture powder in there
what I like to do is take my fork comb and just smooth out any frizz
that might be on top. Then I like to use... we're going to go ahead and pull
the hair up into the ponytail. I like to use these hair bungees.
They have a hook on each end and I typically just get these off of Amazon.
These are also linked in my Amazon storefront if you want to check them out
as well. They usually come in a pack with
multiple different colors. I'm just going to be using this brown one on her
but I love using these for a lot of my ponytail hairstyles.
So what I'm going to do is just gather up
her hair in my hands and I've kind of got it in like a u-shape
and I'm just going to lightly start like combing it up with my hands
like in that u-shape and just kind of smoothing it out with my hands and
bringing it up to the height that I want it to.
So I want it to be kind of centered so it gets that perky
voluminous look and I'm just going to bring my hands together
as we go up and I'm not worried about this being super smooth. I
actually want it to have some texture so I'm going to also use my
fork comb to just smooth out some frizz near this
area. I'm going to pinch and pull a little bit of this up
and then I'm going to make sure it's centered. I'm going
to make sure her front pieces are out
and I want it to kind of swoop around the ear a little bit
so I'm going to pull that out a little bit
and once I have it pretty much how I want it what I'm going to do is I'm
going to hook this bungee underneath the ponytail
and one other little tip if you're working on someone with finer hair
maybe they don't have a ton of hair and you really need something for this to
hook onto she doesn't have that issue because
she's got that really coarse thick hair so this bungee is just going to lock
right in you can also another little tip trick
hack is on this bottom layer you can tease
on top of it when you are working on your very bottom section and that'll
just give it extra grip and something to
hold on to so I'm going to just hook it on the underneath part of her hair
the underneath part of that ponytail and then I'm going to stretch it
around and I'm going to keep tension on it
with my left hand and then with my right hand I'm going to
bring it around one more time her hair's super thick so it's only going to go
around that like two times
and I'm going to get it to hook right into that first hook
sometimes that's not going to be able to happen
because their hair is too thick but if you can get the two hooks to hook
together that is definitely ideal if not if it
can just hook into like teasing or something that's going to
just hold it and keep it nice and secure okay so once we have
that bungee wrapped around the hair I like to just
go through and pinch and pull usually the bungee is going to keep it nice and
tight which is why I like it but I still have a little bit of wiggle
room to pull out some pieces so around the
ear I like to make sure the swoop is how I
like it take my fork comb smooth out any frizz
and then I just like to walk around the style
and make sure that the volume is even everywhere if I want more volume
back here you can take your fork comb and just kind
of pull up on this hair a little bit to give it
some more volume I'm going to pull it out a little bit
more down here you can pull it up a little bit in the
front okay and then what I'm going to do is
just spray that top a little bit so
you don't have any frizz and then I'm going to take my fork comb I love
taking this end of the comb to really comb out
the curls so I'm just taking it on the ends
and really making sure that those curls are
more thinned out now what I'm going to do is take my
pink pewter comb and we're going to start teasing
so I'm going to start on this top section
and I'm going to take a little bit of my
puff me texture powder and pump some in right at that
base area taking it straight up and just going to tease just at that base
and then I like to take one of these clips
and just very gently and carefully clip it right up top
we're going to take another section down lift the hair straight up I'm going to
pump a little bit more texture powder in and just tease at that root area
and go ahead and just very carefully clip that in with that section
we're going to continue lift the hair up pump a little bit more
texture powder and I am keeping it straight up it's not
here it's straight up this way that way we really get maximum volume
let me go ahead and clip that up and take another section
and I'm going to pump a little bit more
and we're just going to very lightly tease that I'm going to go ahead and
grab another clip because her hair is so thick
and so heavy we're going to just very carefully place another one there
and I just want to work on these curls a little bit as I work my way back up
so I'm going to now go in for a little bit of soothing cream
any type of cream paste will work for this
just the key is we want to eliminate more frizz we want to really define those curls
and we just want to really add a lot of shine
so I don't know if you guys can tell like how much that just really defined those curls
and put less frizz into it
all right we're going to take our very next section down
we're just going to work our way up in sections
section by section I'm going to take that fork
and and just make sure that these curls are combed out
I'm going to take a little bit more of the air smoothing cream
I'm just using a little bit working it in my hands
and then just going through those curls
and especially on those ends where they want to get a little bit frizzier
we're just I'm going to go ahead and spread a little bit of hairspray here at the root area
just to keep that volume in
I'm going to take our next section down
let's see okay
and then I'm going to start taming and smoothing some of this frizz around the T's area
you want to keep that very neat and clean especially on the sides
you don't want to see that
so we're going to just smooth that out
and then I'm going to just kind of hold that and then comb through the ends
and again if you held the heat on your curls long enough
and your curls have set and cool
you do not have to worry about them falling out
as you're combing through them and manipulating them
and working through the hair
they will stay I promise you
okay so you can just see how shiny and defined these curls are getting
all right and then we're going to bring our next section down
and again I'm going to take my fork comb and just work on smoothing the top layer out
from where we teased it
I'm going to take a little bit of hairspray and just perk it up
so it holds in place
I'm going to hold the cheese and just comb through the ends
okay and grab a little bit more smoothing cream
run it through my hands
and we're just going to add some shine to find those curls
and then we're going to take our very last section down
and take that fork comb and just smooth out frizz on the edges
and just on the outer layer
you guys can just see how much volume that now has just with teasing it
I'm going to hold that up and comb through the ends
and then we're going to take a little bit more smoothing cream
and just define and smooth these curls
and at this point if you would like to redefine any curls
you can definitely go back in touch up curls
you can make curls go in a different direction
if you feel like you don't love how they're laying or looking
I'm going to take a little bit of hairspray just around this
our hairline right here
make sure it's nice and smooth and doesn't get frizzy
I'm going to take a little bit of hairspray just on this top part right here
I'm going to go ahead and I'm going to spray the rest of the ends of the hair
and then if the hair got flattened at all from the clip
you can just lift that back up
just touch that back up
and then lastly what I like to do is just come underneath the hair
and grab a decent sized little piece of hair to wrap around the ponytail
just to hide it
so you want to make sure that this piece is smooth from roots to ends
and then I'm just going to take it and I like to
turn it this way a little bit
just like to wrap it around to hide that hair bungee
and you just continue to wrap it around until the strand runs out
and then when we get to the very end
I just like to take a bobby pin
a small one
I like to use the smaller ones
either a two inch or even the ones that are smaller than two inch
and what I like to do is
open up the bobby pin and stick the hair in between it
and then wrap it around and put it down in between
the bobby pin so it wraps and then it gets stuck in between
so it's super secure it's not coming off
and then what I like to do
wrap it a couple more times to shorten it
and then I just like to stick it up under the ponytail
and it'll keep all of that hair right up in there
all right here is the completed look
I hope you guys love this tutorial and you learned a lot
