I love how expressive & fun she was in this.
First of all, you know you have an entire couch like on you right now.
I know and I'm jet lagged so I've been laying down every break or so.
Yeah that works.
Um okay hottest vampire Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise?
Oh Brad Pitt.
Robert Pattinson or Alexander Skarsgård?
Robert Pattinson.
Why?
I like the accent and the smoldering look he gives.
I mean I know that they both do but I kind of like his a little more.
I kind of feel like he looks constipated.
Well that's your personal opinion.
I didn't say that.
I think he's hot.
Um talk to me about playing a mom.
I mean you're a little you're a little young to play a mom.
Little? I am young.
Uh it was great.
Honestly for me it was really sweet.
I was surprised at how my voice changed because when I when I was doing the scenes with Dennis
he had already pre-recorded some of his stuff and when I heard his voice it was like
oh my gosh how are you?
Like I just immediately fell in love with the character.
I think something happens to you when you're a mom.
You have to say like you can do a mom voice now.
Yes I have a mom voice.
What kind of mom do you think you're gonna make in the future?
My mom was so fun.
Honestly I hope to kind of be like my mom.
She was she had like the Drew Barrymore 90s cut and like was so cute and just fun.
You know I want to be fun but she's also very honest with me.
I'm thinking about like Amy Poehler in Mean Girls.
She's like I'm the cool mom.
Totally.
I'm not like a regular mom.
I'm the cool mom.
Talk to me about kind of your trajectory so far in this business.
Are you you know obviously you're media fodder all the time.
How has it been kind of pushing through all that?
You know I think if anything it's only adding to my story.
You know I think people are wanting me to be something I'm not
and that's fine because ultimately I am who I'm saying I am.
I work hard.
I'm kind.
You can ask anybody who's worked with me.
I'm professional and I'm young so of course I've made mistakes and I've lived my life.
So I think it is just about pushing me to kind of get to that other side
because ultimately it is all noise and it'll go away.
It'll be somebody else's problem eventually.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
I hope I'm happy and I hope I'm just doing everything that I love
which right now seems to be this and I don't think it's going anywhere anytime soon hopefully.
Okay let's talk about your music for a second.
I was there the night that you performed with Taylor.
Yay that's so crazy!
Which was amazing.
Oh thank you.
I got really mad at Brit for not telling me.
But what can you tell me about the new album?
You know there's so much stuff written about it.
She's grown up.
She's this.
She's that.
But what can you tell me about the new album?
I just can't wait for it to come out because all the speculation is almost even better.
You know this is a very important record for me and I knew that
and I took that into consideration.
I am a pop artist and I needed to figure out what was going to separate me from other artists
and I think I had a lot to say this time around.
And they're just generally messages about what I view when people are coming at me
with so many different things and I'm just proud of it you know.
Talk about having number one on Billboard.
Isn't that crazy?
Especially because we actually didn't expect that for Good For You.
We didn't even think it was going to be the first single
but I just wanted something that was really sexy and confident without trying too hard.
I didn't want another rager.
I just kind of wanted something soft and I liked it and it was a very it was like a surprise.
I think we were technically about to enter the third single
and we just kind of let Good For You go because it was it was great.
I just want to look good for you.
Oh my gosh thank you.
You do.
I'm your Marquee Stein.
You know my song.
And I think you are my 14 karat.
Oh man.
I wish.
This is a kid's movie.
I want to know about Neighbors 2.
Talk about it.
What's going on with it?
Are you done?
I'm not allowed to talk about it.
Are you falling in love with Efron?
Is there really?
In real life?
I'm just kidding.
Is there really like a contract where like you have to sign something like yeah I can't talk about?
No it's just you also have to be respectful you know.
They're creating things and unfortunately when media gets a hold of it it's like well
let us make our movie you know what I mean?
So I mean it's not mine but you know whoever is making a film so.
When you're doing the voice recording for this character is there a process?
Do you go dark?
Do you like go all goth and paint black nail polish?
Maybe that would have helped but I didn't.
I didn't realize how hard it would be because I'm a very expressive person.
So I'm very like my face and my hands and all of it.
So that doesn't really work when you're in the recording studio for this.
I had to really kind of push myself to get to those high places and yeah it's kind of hard.
In my head I'm trying to think of another pun for one of your songs.
What's one of your favorite things that people said to you like a song pun?
Oh the biggest one I've gotten especially from guys.
When you're ready come and get it.
I'm like oh my god I can't good night.
I'm totally gonna use that now.
Oh my god as long as it's a joke.
I'd wait for the laugh.
I'm like oh no you're serious okay.
You're like gee I haven't heard that one before.
You know what it's funny.
Talk to me about mixing it up because obviously this is you know a family film.
Neighbors 2 is not a family film.
How do you kind of pick and choose what you want to do?
I think for me I do that with everything.
You know when I did the Toronto Film Festival a couple years ago during the day we premiered
Hotel Transylvania and then that night we premiered Spring Breakers.
And I like the diversity because I grew up on a kids show and I respect that audience.
In a way I miss it because I love kids.
They're honest.
They're real.
I'd rather hang out with kids sometimes than adults.
So I like that and I love being respectful of that audience.
How does social media play a role in kind of your brand and your promotion but
you having sole control over that?
I love that.
I mean I think if anything I'm able to speak about what I want to speak about when the
I'm able to connect with the people that really matter which is my fans.
And that's something that I think all I care about.
As long as they know who I am that's all that matters.
Is there still like kind of a role model pressure for you?
Because you know it's funny today I saw like you had some kids in here talking like
and they're watching you.
Is there still that pressure or you just do you?
A little bit of both but it's not I wouldn't call it pressure.
I mean it is overwhelming when you're growing up yourself and you see these little girls
and you're like wait a minute maybe like don't make this mistake or don't do this.
But I think as long as I can just kind of remain who I am and like I said I think people
know my heart.
So even when I'm sitting down with moms no matter what my life is they know who I am
and I think that's incredible you know.
So is it you just made me think something.
Is it ever frustrating because when the fans know your heart but then like it gets media
kind of doesn't know your heart.
Do you ever just want to be like?
Of course.
But it's just noise.
It's like I can't I can't even begin to tell you how frustrating it is.
But at the same time my happiness does not dictate on this business.
If I lost everything tomorrow I would be perfectly fine owning a coffee shop in Texas.
I honestly I don't once I realized that everything went away because that's like you know what
I mean.
This is what I love.
It's my job but it's not gonna that's not gonna matter.
I love you like a love song.
You go leave right now.
Thanks Phil.
You're so cute.
Thank you.
You used that one already.
I know.
