Exploring the Mayan Temple of Quetzalcoatl | Xochicalco Pyramids & Observatory | Megalithomania

Xochicalco is a huge Mayan pyramid site in Moreles, Mexico. The ruins of an ancient city surround a temple of a sacred feathered serpent deity, Quetzalcoatl. The name of the city in the Aztec language of Nahuatl means “In the house of the flowers.” Xochicalco may have housed up to 20,000 people from the period of 700 to 900 AD, but it was occupied from at least 200 BC suggesting a possible Olmec and Teotihuacan influence. It has an astronomical cave where a beam of lights illuminates it at certain times of year, and stunning carvings of Quetzalcoatl in the main temple area, as well as two ball courts, large pyramids and intricate artifacts that are on display in the site museum.
