China introduced sanctions against five European Parliament members in 2021.
Beijing also directed measures against several European research institutes,
with a focus on politics and international issues.
The measures were a direct response to the fact that the EU had previously introduced sanctions against Chinese civil servants,
with reference to human rights violations against the Uyghur minority in Xinjiang.
The Chinese counter-reaction put a stop to a large cooperation agreement between the two.
It was the so-called Comprehensive Agreement on Investment,
an agreement that would make it easier for European companies to operate on the Chinese market.
The European Parliament put the agreement on hold after the Chinese sanctions came into force.
Despite the fact that China is now determined to lift its sanctions,
EU civil servants say that the European measures remain.
The investment agreement is now considered as inactual,
as the conditions are considered outdated.
The EU is now waiting to see if China will come up with more attractive alternatives in future negotiations.
