NASA's New Spaceplane is in Big Problem! No Launch Until...
That’s the big question facing both Sierra Space and NASA as they work to launch the next-generation spaceplane, Dream Chaser.
This vehicle holds a lot of promise and offers key advantages in the race for future space missions. However, despite being completed some time ago, Dream Chaser has struggled to reach the launch pad.
So what’s the current status of Dream Chaser? What challenges are standing in its way? And what steps does Sierra Space need to take to overcome them?
Let’s dive into it on today’s episode of Great SpaceX.

It’s been quite some time since we last heard any major updates on Dream Chaser. In fact, a quick scroll through Sierra Space’s official X page reveals that most recent news has centered around the inflatable habitat module—another component the company is actively developing. Meanwhile, the spaceplane itself, despite being long anticipated, hasn’t made as many headlines.
Dream Chaser Tenacity, the first operational model of the spaceplane, has technically been in production since at least November 2023. That’s when Sierra Space shared detailed images of the vehicle, alongside bold and inspiring words from then-CEO Tom Vice. He said, “Today we have arrived at a profound milestone in both our company’s journey and our industry’s future – one that has been years in the making and is shaped by audacious dreaming and tenacious doing.”

He added, “The Dream Chaser is not just a product; it’s a testament to human spirit, determination, and the relentless pursuit of what lies beyond.”
Since that announcement, Tenacity and its cargo module, known as Shooting Star, were shipped to NASA’s test facility in Ohio for a series of intense environmental trials. These included thermal vacuum tests to simulate the extreme temperatures of space, vibration tests using the world’s most powerful shaker table, and other rigorous assessments meant to prove the spacecraft’s durability. So far, all indications suggest that Dream Chaser has performed well.
