Hey little brother, come here.
Today, I'm going to tell you the story about Mary and how she prepared for Jesus' death on the cross.
Now, it was six days before the Passover, and Jesus came to Bethany.
Bethany was the place where Jesus raised a man named Lazarus from death.
There, they had a feast for Jesus.
Enjoy the meal!
Martha cooked, and Lazarus was one of the people together with Jesus.
And all of a sudden, Mary brought a very expensive bottle filled with sweet perfume.
She poured the perfume on Jesus' feet, and then wiped the feet with her long hair.
The sweet smell of the perfume filled the entire house.
And one of the disciples there was Judas Iscariot.
He was the one who would betray Jesus later on.
Anyway, he said,
Why would she just waste that perfume?
It's probably worth 300 silver coins, and that money can actually help the poor people.
But he didn't say this because he cared about the poor.
It was because he was the one who kept the money bag, and he would often steal from it.
And Jesus said,
Leave her alone.
Mary saved this sweet perfume to this day to prepare for the day of my burial.
The poor will always be around you, so you can help them anytime you wish to.
But I will not always be around you.
This is how Jesus was preparing to die on the cross, just for us.
So, I guess Jesus already knew everything.
Of course, everything.
He must really, really love us.
I want to get something for him, just like Mary did.
Okay, let's think about what we can give him.
And that's the end of today's story.
Leave her alone, Jesus replied.
It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial.
You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.
John 12, 7-8
