Adam and eve & Other Bible Tales
All the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah. They said to him, "You are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways; now appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have." But when they said, "Give us a king to lead us," this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the LORD.

In early history, the people of Israel had long been led by a series of judges appointed
by God.
These judges acted as both military leaders and spiritual guides, guiding the nation through
times of trouble and rebellion.
Israel's next judge, Samuel, is born to Hannah, a previously barren woman.
When Samuel was just a boy, he was handed over to Eli, a priest in the temple.
Come here, my boy.
Samuel was raised by a priest Eli in the temple.
God spoke to Samuel when he was 12 years old that he would become the new priest.
Eli's own sons were not behaving well and not listening to God's instructions.
His sons get killed in the battle, and the Philistines capture the Ark of Covenant, Israelite
symbol of God.
Eli dies when he hears this bad news.
When Samuel grows up, he becomes a special messenger for God, and everyone in Israel
knew him as a prophet.
Return to the Lord with all your hearts.
He shares God's messages with the people, reminding them to be kind, honest, and follow
God's rules.
The land of Israel was at peace for a very long time.
During the later years of Prophet Samuel's life, he appointed his two sons, Joel and
Abijah, as judges to assist him in governing Israel.
However, as time went on, Joel and Abijah started to act unjustly.
They turned away from God's ways and became corrupt judges, accepting bribes and perverting
justice for personal gain.
This behavior troubled the people, and they went to Samuel to express their concerns.
One day, some old men approached Samuel.
Prophet Samuel, your sons are not following your footsteps.
They are not righteous like you.
Samuel listened carefully to Rachel's words, but he knew he had to make a difficult decision.
He gathered the people together and addressed them with a heavy heart.
My dear people, I have heard your worries and I have seen my son's actions.
It is with great sorrow that I must remove Joel and Abijah from their positions.
The people were surprised by Samuel's decision, but they trusted his judgment.
Samuel continued,
I apologize for their behavior, and I assure you that I will still be here to guide and
lead you with God's help.
Prophet Samuel, you are a just and wise leader.
We believe in you and will stand by your side.
With the people's support, Samuel carried out his decision.
This never would have happened if we had a king.
Keep quiet.
Prophet Samuel is our judge.
He leads us wisely.
Look around you.
Every other land is ruled by a king.
Everyone around us is getting prosperous except for us.
One day, the Israelites gathered together and talked among themselves.
They looked around and saw other nations with kings,
and they thought having a king would make them stronger and safer.
We need a king.
Let us meet Prophet Samuel about this.
So they went to the wise old prophet Samuel, who was their leader,
and shared their thoughts with him.
The people of Israel declared to Samuel,
Prophet Samuel, you are old, and your sons do not follow your ways.
We want a king like the other nations have.
We want someone to lead us into battle, protect us from enemies,
and make us a powerful kingdom.
Samuel was sad to hear this request because he knew that God was their true king.
He, along with other judges in the history,
was there to help them follow God's laws.
Out of his troubled heart, Samuel prayed to the Lord.
Lord, it is not you that they have rejected,
but they have rejected me as their king.
I will give them a king,
but you must warn them about the consequences of having a human ruler.
He will take your sons and make them serve with his chariots and horses.
This king you ask for would take a tenth of each person's flock,
and he would take all women and male slaves for his own use.
With words of warning,
Samuel ended his message from the Lord to the people of Israel.
When the day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen,
but the Lord will not answer.
No, we still want a king.
We want to be like other nations.
All right, I shall do as you wish.
With God's guidance,
Samuel began to search for the right person to become their king.
Go to the land of Benjamin and search for a man named Saul.
I have chosen him to be the king.
After searching for days,
Samuel finally reached a small village
where he heard about a young man named Saul who lived there.
In the meantime, Saul, the son of Kish,
was completely unaware that he was to be the ruler of Israel.
He spent his days watching his father's donkeys.
That day, Saul's donkey wandered off,
and he went looking for them.
Donkey, donkey, where are you?
They searched through the lands of Shalem and then Benjamin,
but they couldn't find the donkeys.
We should go back. Father will start worrying now.
I heard Prophet Samuel is here in the village.
We should go and seek his help.
Well come, let's go.
As they went up the hill to the city,
they met a young woman coming out to draw water.
Do you know where the Prophet Samuel is?
The woman replied that the Prophet was staying outside the village.
The men thanked her and headed toward the village.
Just then, Samuel saw Saul.
Then God provided a series of mystical signs
to assure Samuel that Saul should be made the king.
Saul was tall, strong, and handsome,
and he seemed like the perfect choice to be the first king of Israel.
Hey look, there is someone coming towards us.
Yes, looks like he is.
Saul found Samuel and said to him,
Do you know where the Prophet Samuel is?
I am Samuel. Aren't you Saul?
Yes, I am. How do you know?
I know. Come, I want to show you something important.
Samuel asked Saul to follow him.
Then he said,
Do not worry about the donkeys. They have been found.
When they reached him, Saul did not realize what lay ahead
until Samuel anointed his head with oil.
He kissed him and said,
God has anointed you as the ruler of his people.
You will be their leader.
But I am just a simple farmer
from a small family in the tribe of Benjamin.
How can I be the king?
God sees the goodness in your heart,
and he knows you will do your best to lead his people.
Trust in him, and he will guide you.
From that moment,
Saul knew that he had a great responsibility,
but he also knew that God would be with him,
guiding and supporting him.
Samuel called a meeting of the people of Israel
to reveal that Saul was God's choice.
He was brought out, and the people had their first look.
When Saul stood among the people,
he was taller than everyone around.
Do you see him, whom the Lord has chosen?
Long live the king!
Then Samuel told the people the rights and duties of the kingship.
Word spread throughout the land about Saul's anointing,
and the people rejoiced,
knowing that God had chosen a leader to watch over them.
As the first king of Israel, Saul had nothing.
No army, no palace, and no royal city.
He was not eager to become king.
After Samuel anointed him before the people,
Saul went back to his home in Gibeah.
He continued to work on his father's land
until he was needed to lead the people in battle.
Saul started his reign with great enthusiasm
and won many battles for the Israelites.
The people were proud to have him as their king.
But as time passed, Saul's heart changed,
and he became proud and disobedient to God's commands.
He stopped seeking God's guidance
and started making decisions based on his own desires.
And so, the story of Saul teaches us that sometimes,
when we least expect it,
God chooses ordinary people to do extraordinary things.
With faith and trust in his plan,
we can find the strength to fulfill our destinies
and make a positive difference in the lives of others.
