China has around 12 million Catholics, divided into two groups.
The state-controlled church and the underground church.
Before the agreement, the state church did not recognize the authority of the Pope,
while the underground Catholics did, often with persecution as a result.
Critics believe that the Vatican's agreement with Beijing is a gift to the communist government.
In 2020, the then US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo urged the Vatican to abrogate the agreement.
He claimed that the human rights for Christians in China had been damaged after the agreement came into force.
For example, he mentioned a Catholic who was abused and arrested for refusing to join a state church.
In 2024, the agreement was extended by another four years.
The Vatican still has no formal diplomatic ties with China,
and is the only European country that officially recognizes Taiwan.
The Chinese Communist Party claims the self-governing island,
but has never ruled over democratic Taiwan.
