Hi, in today's video I will show you the pronation of a serve. So in the last video I showed you the
correct grip, the continental grip. So if you haven't watched that one I will link it up in
the top at the end of the video. Okay let's get started. So if you're using the continental grip
you have to pronate to be able to hit the ball. If you're using pancake grip the strings will
be the correct way. So if you're holding a continental grip, the hammer grip, what will
happen there is you go to the edge of the ball then you have to pronate to be able to hit the ball.
So in today's video I will show you seven drills that you can use. The first one, so what is
pronation? The easiest way to explain this is that you take your hand like this, put it back here so
the thumb points down. Then you go up and then you turn and give a high five and then turn again
so the thumb points down. I'm showing this side. Thumb goes down, edge of the hand up, turn
and make high five and then continue turning. The thumb goes down and what will happen as well is
my shoulder will internally rotate. So that's the pronation. I will show it with a racket as well.
There's six other drills. The first one is you take a racket in the hammer grip
and just hit on the edge of the ball like this. Let it bounce twice. Notice when I do it it's
I hit and I continue like this. If you're gripping too hard this will happen and you don't
want that. You want the head to continue smooth. So the third exercise you take a racket like this
and then you will pronate just before you hit. You go with your edge just to the ball and then
you pronate. Use your elbow not your wrist. Elbow has to rotate. The next exercise I like to do
with my students is I take my racket like this. I go back, pronate. So like this. Start here, back,
pronate. That's a fun exercise to do running up for a lob and you want to hit like this. You can
do the same between the legs. It's the same technique. So you have to have a service grip
and go between your legs. Next exercise I like to stand on baseline
and my service grip. It's a good idea to grip it up a little bit. You put the racket here 90 degrees
and go up and tap and tap. So what's happening here is you start here, contact and turn.
When I finish my elbow will be higher than my shoulder. The butt cap will point up. My shoulder
will have internally rotated. Okay so the next exercise I like to do is sit down like this.
Take my racket here, go up, pronate and down. As you can see I rotated my shoulder. My elbow is high
and I finish to the side with my knuckles going this way. It's a great way to practice on the
pronation. So if your racket is going this way and you have a bend in your wrist you have done it
wrong. So you have to be here, elbow high, internal rotate, strings going this way and the knuckles
going that way. In this last drill I will use the whole serve. I want to use my legs.
So I will stand here. I can start like this, contact, pronate and follow through. Up,
contact, pronate, follow through. High elbow, butt cap pointing towards the ceiling,
internally rotating my shoulder. So when I finish I want to end up on the side like this.
You can do the same thing with the whole motion. So don't use your feet now because that will make
it so much harder. You just want to practice on the pronation. So go up, make contact, pronate,
internally rotate your shoulder and down. Up with the edge, high five,
continue pronation, elbow up and follow through. So that was seven tips and drills you can do to
improve your pronation in a serve. I hope you liked this video and I'll see you next time.
