Hello Epic People, Mike here.
Today, I'm going to be talking about my experience
with shooting portrait at a studio environment
with Leica Q3.
So, a couple of days ago, my friend called me
and he asked me if I want to join on his model test shoot
at a studio in downtown LA.
So, I said, why not?
So, I actually packed all my Sony gear
with 50 prime, 85 prime, you know, 70 to 200
and all that, you know, portrait lenses.
So, I went and then we're all preparing,
you know, we're trying to test all the gear
and all of a sudden, my friend Vincent goes,
Hey, why don't you just shoot everything with Leica Q3?
Whatever, why not?
Because I'm just shooting for fun today.
So, I decided to shoot with Leica Q3.
The studio that I shot was in downtown LA.
It's called All-in-One Studio.
You guys should definitely check it out
because it was very clean, very spacious
with a lot of different gear that you can borrow.
So, if you guys are looking for a studio in LA,
definitely check them out.
And for model, her name was Savannah.
And then hair and makeup was done by Celine.
I'll link all of their stuff
down below in the description.
Just quickly, my camera settings.
I put daylight balance on
for the white balance on my camera.
And I did adjust, you know, aperture
and ISO and shutter manually.
For the file size, I put JPEG large and DNG large
because I knew I was going to crop later on.
And I shot everything in black and white.
The monochrome with high contrast, I believe.
Because I know later on if I wanted color,
I'll definitely go back on DNG
and get some color stuff.
For me, 28mm was very hard focal length
for me to shoot in portrait orientation
because if you get too close,
every, you know, the ends, top and bottom
will get stretched out.
I just tried to stay back
and get everything in frame
and then take care of it in post.
I did use face autofocus.
But the problem was
if I went too shallow of an aperture,
the camera doesn't get the eye.
So get the whole body in a square.
But when that happens,
sometimes the eye is not sharp
or it focuses on some other body parts.
So at the end,
I just decided to just use a field or spot.
So every time I move the field to,
you know, the eyes.
So that's what I did.
And for the second look,
I think I actually did use a continuous lighting.
I think it was aperture 600D.
I did not purchase a flash trigger
for my Leica Q3 yet.
So I just had to use continuous lighting.
And also just letting you guys know,
if you guys are trying to use the JPEG
or just have both JPEG and DNG,
I recommend you to turn off the feature called IDR.
So what that is,
is it automatically brings up the darkest shadow
to give a little bit more dynamic range on your JPEG.
So when you have that thing turned on,
when you look at it from behind your camera,
you will see it as if everything is lit up correctly.
But if you go into your DNG,
it looks completely dark.
For some shot,
I kind of wish I could get a little bit more closer,
like more of a 85-50mm equivalent.
But I was actually pretty happy with the 28mm.
So that's it for me today.
Hopefully you guys like my video.
