This first of Debussy's great piano works was published in 1901. The slow middle movement of the three-movement work had already been composed in 1894. This gravitational Sarabande in the old style was published in its first version as a newspaper supplement in 1896 (for this early version, see HN 846, Images 1894) and was slightly revised for Pour le piano. The Sarabande quickly became popular and was later orchestrated by Ravel. The first movement, Prélude, conjures up Javanese music and evokes gongs, while the motoric Toccata had to be repeated at the premiere by the brilliant Ricardo Viñes.
