Potsdamer Platz

Alan,
I'm forcing a geometric shape here out of this line
And the way that I'm positioning the camera and angling it
You know, I'm getting the white line into each corner
Sometimes I use grid lines on live view to help line things up
It's normally with the wider lenses
I want a 50, 50mm at the moment
At F11, I don't want there to be any foreground
I just want it to be a block of tone
Where everything's sharp
If there was depth, then it would
It wouldn't be as surreal as that
So we're here at the Berlin Holocaust Memorial
Where I took the following photograph
This photograph is probably one of the most
important ones to me that I've taken
As you may have realized from my surname
My family origins are in Germany
My grandfather was born in Cologne
And because of the nature of him being Jewish
He had to leave quite urgently in the late 1930s
And luckily made it to England
And started life there
So this place is quite a significant place for me
Obviously, I wanted to take a picture with a point
And I actually waited here for two days
Before I got that shot
It's not necessarily a place for making street photography
But given my family history
And I wanted to do something here
It's a very powerful memorial
For me, it's very bleak
And it's kind of like final
Miserable feeling thing
Here we are
So here we have some remnants of the Berlin Wall
Pretty insane that they've left them out
It's really cool
The thing I don't understand
Can someone explain in the comments
Why the hell everyone's covered it in chewing gum
It's disgusting
Garbage
Tear down this wall
Top tips for sub-freezing shooting
Long johns under the trousers
Carry more batteries than you think you need
Because the cold saps the power quicker
I once shot in the Arctic
Where I had to keep my camera batteries
Like under my arms
Because otherwise I'd put them in the camera
And they'd be like running down already
Without using them
I think cut it at just the batteries
I'm not sure exactly what this translates to
But I'm guessing it's something along the lines of
Certain death if you walk this way
I mean there's no railing
Any child could just walk over that
Coming from the world capital of health and safety
Gone mad, London
This place is far out
We're in Berlin
We're here in the bikini mall
Because we're in Berlin
I'm wearing sunglasses
Because everyone here is really cool
So I'm trying to fit in
And look like a local
As I did in the Paris video
Which click up here
If you haven't seen that one
Getting better at this whole YouTubing thing
We're here with Agostino Peroni
The legend, the man, the myth
One of my very closest friends in the world for sure
And this is his first solo show in a gallery
Local Spirits is the title of the exhibition
And it's very close to my heart
Because it's what I do
My other passion is my job
Which is cocktail making
I'm a bartender
You'll find me when I'm not traveling
At the Connaught Bar
In the heart of Mayfair, London
And we capture moments with a camera
Or with a cocktail
That's true
We are here with Sara Lily Perez
Who whom the gallery is named for
Can you tell us that fun fact about Berlin
That you said earlier
So Berlin is one of the cities
Or the city that has the most galleries in the world
That's basically it
That's it
Thank you, Sara
We got it in
Everything is going to be filmed one take
Because it's so bloody cold
If we look down here
You can see a vast expanse of snow
Let's stop looking at the sky
Let's look at it in terms of tones
So here we have white
Then here we have gray
And then here we have technically black
Like at the tree line
So what you want to do
You want to get your camera high enough
To isolate a subject inside the snow
Let's use one of my friends here as an example
Who wants to walk
I think it should be right
So before anyone goes
I shot it candidly
But for demonstration purposes
We're going to recreate it now
So if you can walk
Keep walking
Wow
There you go
There's a picture of you
A memory of our trip
He's like don't make me do that again
Here's what I'm talking about
White snow
Black jacket
Shadows
Gray
It's tonal
It's got light
It's nice
That's it
The most German thing ever right now
This food
This
Even got a German here
We're on the U-Bahn
This is very exciting
It's my first time on the German metro
I like going on public transport
In cities when I can
You never know what you're going to find
Slash
I know exactly what I'm going to find
Miserable looking people
Check
Love that
A train of some sort
Check
And some consistent halogen lighting and geometry
Tick
Alexanderplatz
I like the colors in this station
What a stupid map
This is 2000 meters
It's really handy to know
What's 10 kilometers away
Got a challenge for the director Biz Thompson
I'm going to give you 10 seconds
To find this
Of Berlin
10
9
And
Time's up
No
I was genuinely looking for it
It's like you are somewhere
Within this enormous ring
Apparently Bono is just this way
I can't wait
I spent a lot of effort
Trying to
Blend in with the locals
And now that we're here in Berlin
I felt like it's important to do the same
To make them comfortable
So just I've got this
That's it
A lot easier than the Parisian disguise
Actually
I'm a local, yeah
And that is my top tip
For blending in
With the locals here in Berlin
I've had no problems ever
Shooting in Germany
But I'm very discreet
If you want to find out
How to be more discreet
Check out my hip shooting video
Up here or here
Or wherever the hell it goes
So endeth our time here in Berlin
Many geometric shots have been found
Some have been taken
Some are even successful
So the architecture here is very interesting
It's very industrial
There's a lot of, you know
Signs of the communist thing that went down
But it's a very different place
To London and Paris and New York
And all those kinds of places
I hope you enjoyed the video
Hope you got something out of it
Learned a thing or two
And look forward to seeing you
On the next one
Thank you
Merry bloody Christmas
You don't need to clap me
Welcome to Berlin
Take two
In case we prefer this option
To the one we did at the Neue Museum
Yeah
