The Cello Sonata was written in July 2022, and I gave the premiere on 21 August 2022 at the Musikalische Begegnungen Lenzburg in Switzerland, with François-Xavier Poizat at the piano. The first French performance took place on 25 August 2022
at the Wissembourg Festival in Alsace, with Albert Cano Smit at the keyboard.
On the one hand the sonata, in four movements, is strongly influenced by current world events, but on the other hand it was also inspired by Alfred Schnittke’s masterpiece, the Sonata No.1 for cello and piano. The Sonata reflects life in all its contradictoriness. Formative traumatic events go hand in hand with the ever-present hope that things will take a turn for the better. What a lot of strength and hope people can develop, however difficult their situation might be!
All the themes that will take shape in the course of the sonata already appear in the first movement: rattling battle-tanks, muffled basses and dreamlike floating motifs.
The second movement is a lullaby. Behind it is the optimistic thought that whatever is happening in the world, every hour and every day new life is possible, and this is nothing short of a miracle. Then in the third movement, we hear completely different, hostile sounds: bells toll their warning and sirens shrill. Finally, the fourth movement is headed Danse Macabre – the dance of the dead soldiers.
