The "Fantasia on Greensleeves" was initially used in the third act of Vaughan Williams' Shakespeare-inspired opera "Sir John in Love". In 1934, under the watchful eye of the composer, Ralph Greaves arranged the piece into the version we most commonly hear today. The tune itself is a traditional English folk song. Occasionally attributed to Henry VIII, it is more likely to be Elizabethan in origin.
It is played here by the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Bryden Thomson.
