Balancing toy physics....Tweety Boppers, Inertia, Center of gravity, Harmonic motion
It's silly but there is some science lessons in this fun device. It can be an example of rotational inertia, used for center of gravity and center of mass demonstrations, or simple and complex harmonics. The tweety bopper is able to experiences two simple harmonic motions simultaneously,. If tuned so that the frequencies match, it can exhibit resonance as the energy in one harmonic motion can transfer to a second harmonic motion and then revert back and forth from one to the other for several exchanges. This has been a device in my classroom for years and years, and has amused students with its captivatingly simple movements.
