Shrine Our Lady of Las Lajas [ Ipiales, Colombia ]

Built inside the canyon of Guaitara River, the Shrine of Our Lady of Las Lajas is a Roman Catholic minor basilica located in Ipiales, Colombia. Colorfully displayed on the rock wall inside the church is the image of the Madonna and Child, which goes several feet inside the rock, for which pious believers claim it is 100 percent natural and of divine origin which was supernaturally formed without the help of human hands. The miraculous event, a Marian Apparition, that occured in 1754 is where the present church, Gothic in style, drew its inspiration. Purportedly, Maria Quiñones and her deaf-mute daughter Rosa was caught in a strong storm when they sought refuge betweeen the gigantic Lajas (slabs of stone) when suddenly Rosa exclaimed "the Mestiza is calling me", instantly healing her. Since then, the place became a popular pilgrimage site for Christians from both Colombia and neighboring Ecuador and the whole world.
